Our History

In 1880, Hugh Rainey a successful local merchant commissioned a grand Gentleman’s residence, which he named Rainsford House. Once completed, he also acquired the surrounding lands, building extensive stabling and paddocks to house the thoroughbred horses that became one of his passions (eventually even acquiring the local racecourse at Raceview, near Broughshane).

In 1910, JB McAllister, a local whiskey distiller changed the name of the building to Tullyglass House (this name aptly coming from the old word ‘tullach’, broadly meaning a landmark hill, a meeting place and/or, a location for fairs).

The building itself was always known for its style, for example Corinthian columns being used internally within the architectural design. Throughout its history, many from the fields of celebrity, politics and business, along with other dignitaries, passed through the doors of Tullyglass House, even before it became Tullyglass Hotel later in the 20th century.
