Concert performances from some of the UK’s top chamber musicians in the beautiful parish churches of Adderbury and Deddington in North Oxfordshire.

31 Years of Music in Adderbury

North Oxfordshire-based musician Chris Windass founded the Music in Adderbury series in 1986. Chris worked as a freelasnce violinist with many of the UK’s leading ensembles, and chamber and symphony orchestras. However, his lifelong passion for chamber music had led to form his own group, the Adderbury Ensemble, and the Music in Adderbury series began as a way to br

ing the group’s music to audiences in his home village. Music in Adderbury concerts were originally held only in the glorious setting of the parish church in the beautiful North Oxfordshire village of Adderbury. Nowadays, though, some of each season’s series concerts take place at the equally stunning parish church of Adderbury’s neighbouring village, Deddington. As well as numerous concerts from the Adderbury Ensemble, these venues have witnessed performances from many other brilliant musicians and chamber ensembles from the UK and overseas. Some of the internationally celebrated soloists who have taken part in the Music in Adderbury series include Christopher Warren-Green; Robert Cohen; Bradley Creswick; Andrew Manze; Nigel North; Emily Beynon; Jane Atkins; Sian Edwards; Jonathan Kelly; Carolyn Sampson; and Andrew Haveron. MiA is back at Deddington Church this Sunday evening (September 22 at 18:00) with a concert by two of the country’s top prize winning musicians — principal cellist at the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Alice Neary, and keyboard maestro Viv McLean. Our final concert of the MiA spring/summer season takes place at Adderbury Parish Church this Sunday (September 1 at 18:00) and features the lovely Adderbury Ensemble playing string quartets by Haydn and Beethoven, plus a selection of beautiful pieces from the Danish String Quartet’s “Last Leaf”. (If you’re not familiar with Last Leaf, by the way, do have a listen on YouTube or any of the other music streaming services... It really is wonderful!) Our July 7 concert was originally intended to be the last of this year’s spring/summer season, but happily we’ve been able to arrange a couple more... So, this Sunday (July 28, 2024 at 18:00) we’re putting on an early evening performance at Deddington Church by the Adderbury Ensemble, featuring two absolutely beautiful piano quartets — one each from Fauré and Mozart. This Sunday evening (July 7 at 18:00) sees the grand finale of our Spring/Summer 2024 season at Adderbury Parish Church when the Adderbury Ensemble are joined by internationally acclaimed violinist Bradley Creswick to play quartets by Beethoven and Schubert. Wonderful cellist Adrian Bradbury is also dropping by on the night for the band’s performance of Schubert’s exquisite String Quintet in C major.

We’re thrilled to launch our Spring/Summer season this Sunday evening (March 24 at 18:00) with a performance from one of the finest UK string quartets to emerge since the turn of the century, the Sacconi Quartet. Hot on the heels of their playing works by Mozart and Britten in the afternoon for the Oxford Coffee Concerts audience, they’ll be heading up the Banbury Road to Adderbury Parish Church to play the same pieces but with the addition of American composer Caroline Shaw’s wonderful “Entr’acte”. We’ve been so fortunate over our 35-plus years of MiA events to have had some of the world’s most celebrated musicians make the trip to north Oxfordshire to play for us. This Sunday’s concert at Adderbury Parish Church (November 19 at 18:00) is pretty typical in that regard... That evening, we welcome top international artists, the Carducci String Quartet to play great works by Shostakovich and Beethoven. And they’ll also be joined by brilliant Australian classical guitarist Craig Ogden (described by BBC Music Magazine as “a worthy successor to Julian Bream”) for a performance of Boccherini ’s Guitar Quintet in D major. Since their formation in 2020, the young, hugely talented Paddington Trio have won first prize at the 70th Royal Over-Seas League Competition for Strings and Piano Ensemble; they’ve won first prize at the NEW FORMATS Project Prize 2022 in Graz; they’ve won second prize and the jury prize for the Best Interpretation of an Estonian Work at the Tallinn International Piano Chamber Music Competition; and they’ve won first prize at the International Clara Schumann Competition. And this Sunday, July 16 at 18:00, our MiA audience at Deddington Church has a fantastic oppportunity to see (and hear) what all the fuss has been about...
