Kevin Macdonald documents the meteoric rise and crushing downfall of British fashion designer John Galliano, who rose to prominence before a number of anti-Semitic and racist remarks came to light.

🎨 WORKSHOP - MASTERCLASS: DYEING THE TARTAN

In this full day masterclass, participants will have the opportunity to explore traditional natural dyes, which were once used to produce the rich and varied colours in the production of tartan, before the introduction of synthetic dyes in the mid 19th century. Learn how to dye red, blue and yellow and then how to combine these to produce various purples, greens and black. All materials will be supplied. Please bring a packed lunch for our break.

Your tutor Carole Keepax started out as an environmental archaeologist, with a fascination and appreciationof Scottish traditions. Her own practice of ‘natural dyeing’came about once she joined the Grampian Guild of Weavers,Spinners and Dyers. Since then, she has completed a ‘Hundred Dye Project’, making samples from all the Scottish plants traditionally used as dyes. Carole believes that we can learn a lot from the knowledge of the past, taking it forward into modern applications.

This workshop is part of fold.thebarnarts Monthly Craft Series. In July & August, we are celebrating "Natural Elements” through a variety of activities.

LIVE MUSIC / OLD BLIND DOGS

We are excited to welcome back 'the Dugs' to their old stomping ground here at the Barn on Friday 30 August at 8pm! 🎻😎

Tickets are being snapped up FAST, and you really don't want to miss this! Grab them here https://tinyurl.com/oldblinddogsatthebarn.

The musical evolution of Old Blind Dogs began in Aberdeen in 1992 with roots that grew from the eclectic music scene that flourished in the Granite City during the early 90’s. Four musicians from very different musical backgrounds came together to create a full-time professional touring band with the aim of showcasing the rich tradition of songs and tunes of the North- East of Scotland on an international stage.

Like many of the early flag bearing Scottish folk bands the Old Blind Dogs line up has faced inevitable changes over the years but the core values at the band's musical heart continue to beat strong. The current line up consists of original member Jonny Hardie (fiddle/vocals),

Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/ vocals), Donald Hay (percussion/vocals) and now joined by the brilliant piper/whistle player Mike Katz, formerly with The Battlefield Band.

The multi award-winning production of Noël Coward’s provocative comedy featuring Andrew Scott (Vanya, Fleabag) returns to the big screen.

As he prepares to embark on an overseas tour, star actor Garry Essendine’s (played by Scott) colourful life is in danger of spiralling out of control. Engulfed by an escalating identity crisis as his many and various relationships compete for his attention, Garry’s few remaining days at home are a chaotic whirlwind of love, s*x, panic and soul-searching.

Filmed live from The Old Vic in London during a sold out run in 2019, Matthew Warchus (Matilda The Musical) directs this giddy and surprisingly modern reflection on fame, desire and loneliness.

✨ Celebrating Unity and Diversity at the Refugee Festival at the Barn! ✨

Over 80 people joined us for a memorable day at the recent Refugee Festival at the Barn, where community and togetherness was celebrated. With a sunny backdrop, the event was a vibrant mix of activities and food, making use of all the Barn’s indoor and outdoor spaces.

A Tasty Start: A delicious Ukrainian light lunch was prepared by local groups from Banchory, followed by a sumptuous Turkish taster buffet for dinner. A big thank you to the generous individual who came forward to support this meal. 🙏💖

Music and Dance: The festival came alive with joyous rhythms and vibrant movements, both indoors and outdoors. 🎶💃

Outdoor Fun: Deeside rugby pitches hosted a range of games including rugby, volleyball, and football, bringing together participants of all ages. ⚽

Creative Activities: Attendees got creative with kite making, origami, and decoupage crafts, fostering artistic expression and cultural exchange. 🎨🪁

A special moment was the unveiling of Sadia Sikander’s stunning mural, ‘Together We Rise’. This artwork, crafted with input from GREC language café in Aberdeen and painted with the help of New Scots community groups in Glasgow, is a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of the refugee community. 🖼️

This festival was part of Scotland’s Refugee Festival in partnership with the Scottish Refugee Council. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the organisations and individuals whose incredible support, generosity, and energy made this event possible.

The programme captures the raw emotion and trailblazing spirit of two dance visionaries, the choreographers Robert Cohan and Kenneth MacMillan, who revolutionised how we perceive and connect with dance.

In Portraits, Cohan's pandemic-inspired solos explore life’s personal moments, creating an intimate self-portrait of the choreographer through his dancers.

MacMillan’s Sea of Troubles, inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet, poignantly explores the universal human emotions of grief, rage, jealousy and the drive for revenge.

Yorke Dance Project, in partnership with the Royal Ballet - and with guest artists Romany Pajdak, Dane Hurst, and Jonathan Goddard - produce and perform this extraordinary journey, providing unprecedented access to the revolutionary works of Cohan and MacMillan.

An ancient monolith stands sentinel in a Cornish field for millennia. Part provocation, part meditation, part invocation, BAFTA-winning documentarian Christopher Morris’s A YEAR IN A FIELD (12A) is a record of their brief interaction.

Morris invites us to slow down, as he films for a year in a West Cornwall field; to immerse ourselves in this quiet, direct-action of stillness, to take a breath and reflect on the planetary impacts of our brief human existence, under the watchful gaze of the Longstone, a 4,000-year-old standing stone that predominates this elemental landscape.

From Winter Solstice 2020 to Winter Solstice 2021, a string of unprecedented worldwide climate disasters, met by weak global political resolve, are revealed as just fleeting moments, under the ever-present unflinching granite gaze of the Longstone.

As the wheel of the year turns, Morris’s ecosophical polemic unearths a mythic reality buried just below the furrowed soil of our consumerist age, suggesting, perhaps, that whilst time may feel like it’s running away at an ever-increasing rate, it’s not too late to pause, reflect, and change.

30/06/2024

Kevin Macdonald documents the meteoric rise and crushing downfall of British fashion designer John Galliano, who rose to prominence before a number of anti-Semitic and racist remarks came to light. John Galliano was the first British fashion designer to head a French haute couture house and was known for daring work which challenged the fashion world. However, he was also plagued by alcoholism and substance abuse.

In 2011, Galliano was convicted of ‘public insults’ based on origin, religion, race or ethnicity after two incidents in which he was filmed making anti-Semitic and racist remarks.

The film features extensive archive footage but is rooted in a series of fascinating, in-depth interviews with the designer, produced exclusively for this film. When covering his work and shows, the film is colourful, kinetic and beautifully captures his artistry.

A highly engaging portrait, expertly crafted to give audiences an insight into the creative mind of John Galliano, his life experiences and his creative endeavours.
