Reflecting on D-Day: A Glimpse into Bangor’s Wartime Past. June 6, 1944, marked a turning point in World War II with the Allied invasion of Normandy, known as D-Day. This monumental event, involving over 156,000 Allied troops, began the liberation of Western Europe from N**i control. The courage and sacrifice of those who participated in D-Day resonate through history, symbolising a critical victory in the fight for freedom and democracy. As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, it’s fitting to reflect on the broader impacts of the war, including the events and activities closer to home in North Down, Northern Ireland.Bangor During World War II

Fantastic day for Bangor. Looking forward to playing a part in the regeneration

NI's first city deal will be signed this morning, signalling the start of a decade of opportunity for Belfast and our wider region.

The Belfast Region City Deal will unlock £1 billion of investment and transform our local economy by creating up to 20,000 new and better jobs, through 20+ ambitious projects and programmes across a range of sectors.

It will focus on making us a world leader in growth sectors like life and health sciences, creative and digital industries and advanced manufacturing, improving our infrastructure and strengthening collaboration.

For residents, it'll mean building the skills and digital capability needed to take on new roles, with better opportunities to access employment through more apprenticeships, programmes to improve digital literacy and living wage jobs.

For businesses, there'll be opportunities for the local supply chain, while social value criteria in contracts will ensure projects have a strong social and environmental impact.

Here in Belfast, projects will include world-class production facilities at Studio Ulster, a Centre for Digital Healthcare Technology, a new visitor attraction, phase 2 of Belfast Rapid Transit and a new bridge linking Belfast city centre and Ormeau Park.

Further afield, plans include the regeneration of Newry city centre, Bangor Waterfront and Carrickfergus, better access to the Mourne Mountains and a new Southern Relief Road at Newry.

Councils, universities and further education colleges have been working since 2017 to make the case for today's milestone investment.

Work will now begin on individual projects, as well as fostering the skills needed to take on new jobs.
