On Friday night, The Boathouse Community Cinema screened the 1976 British film Pressure, to celebrate Black History Month. Our studios were transformed into a warm, inviting space, complete with cosy touches, Ska music in the background and tasty plantain chips to set the scene.

The evening kicked off with a powerful introduction from Indra Ové, who is a famous actor and Horace Ové’s (the film’s director) daughter. Indra shared fascinating stories about her life growing up in an activist family, giving the evening an even greater depth of connection and meaning.

To our delight, we were surprised by the presence of Herbert Norville, the actor who played the main character Tony. Herbert joined us for an inspiring Q&A at the end, sharing his own reflections and about life as a young black man growing up in the 1970s.

Thank you to everyone who made this evening possible and to all who joined and made a donation. ❤️

With each screening, our community cinema is growing as a hub for sharing powerful stories that highlight culture and history. Here’s to many more memorable film nights. 🎬

Sharing free workshops:

"In November Creative Barking and Dagenham are hosting the international street-performance company Picto Facto from Toulouse, France. The company will lead a series of moving light parades in the borough. These special outdoor light events will be filled with music, dancing and huge inflatable puppets.

Ahead of the parades we would like to invite you to join us in making bright and colourful light boxes for the community. This is a creative making workshop suitable for all ages and taking place in community venues across the borough. You will make a colourful light box complete with fairy lights and a personalised message for someone else in the community. When you come to the parade you will get a message from someone else on a light box that you get to take home!"

There are many creative workshops taking place across different venues in Barking and Dagenham. Sign up here: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/free-creative-workshops-for-winter-light-parades-3758439

Friday 25th October Doors open 6:30pm

As part of Black History Month, The Boathouse Community Cinema is proud to show this digitally restored classic film from 1976. 🎥

Recognised as the UK’s first Black dramatic feature-length film, Pressure is a gritty and dynamic study of a generation in crisis, and the problems of being torn between two cultures.

The film is an uncompromising look at the challenges of growing up Black in Britain, and is as relevant today as when it was released in 1976.

The film’s Director, Horace Ove, sadly died last year. His daughter, Indra Ove, will be attending the screening to introduce the film. Indra is a well know actor in her own right, appearing in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Interview with the Vampire, The Fifth Element and numerous TV shows. We are delighted to welcome her to The Boathouse.

Before and after the screening there will be a chance to meet Indra and to chat and mingle in our affordable bar.🥤🍿
