Good morning/bore da.

Following the collision between two trains last week services between Machynlleth and Shrewsbury remain suspended this weekend. Services between Machynlleth and Pwllheli and Machynlleth and Aberystwyth are running as normal however passengers travelling beyond Machynlleth will need to take the replacement bus service to Shrewsbury.

In addition and as a consequence of the collision investigation TfW are unable to run services between Shrewsbury ands Birmingham International. Passengers with tickets for TfW services on this route may use them on West Midlands Trains and Avanti Trains services but clearly travel this weekend will be severely impacted with journey times much longer than normal. The best advice is, if possible, not to travel beyond Machynlleth.

Network Rail and TfW have announced that they expect services to recommence on Monday 28th October, although there may initially be some replacement bus services.

19/10/2024

UPDATE:
The signalling issue near Wolverhampton has spread and trains to Birmingham are now being terminated at Shrewsbury. Passengers travelling further on are being routed via Crewe with tickets being valid for travel between Crewe and Birmingham. Trains from Birmingham are being started from Shrewsbury so passengers travelling can expect delays to their journey due to the longer routing involved.

19/10/2024

We have been advised that due to anticipated sea-flooding around Dyfi Junction tonight the 21.47 train will be terminated at Tywyn where it will turn around to form the 22.17 service to Pwllheli. The last train to Machynlleth tonight will therefore be the 18.57 service.

19/10/2024

Good morning/Bore da
Due to a major signalling failure between Wolverhampton and Birmingham we have been advised that all trains are being terminated at Wolverhampton. Passengers travelling to Birmingham and beyond will need to change to an alternative mode of transport as advised by Transport for Wales staff on the train. This issue is expected to cause problems for most of today.

Free travel for over 60's with the TfW travel pass is back again on the Cambrian line. The scheme runs until 31st March and is valid between Machynlleth and Pwllheli however the passes are NOT valid on school trains. Full details are as follows:

Machynlleth - Pwllheli (Cambrian Coast line)
Each year, from 01 October to 31 March, you can travel between any two of these stations:

Pwllheli, Abererch, Penychain, Criccieth, Porthmadog, Minffordd, Penrhyndeudraeth, Llandecwyn, Talsarnau, Tygwyn, Harlech, Llandanwg, Pensarn, Llanbedr, Dyffryn Ardudwy, Talybont, Llanaber, Barmouth, Morfa Mawddach, Fairbourne, Llwyngwril, Tonfanau, Tywyn, Aberdovey, Penhelig, Dovey Junction, Machynlleth.

Concessionary tickets are NOT valid on the following trains during school terms:

07.49 Barmouth to Tywyn
07.56 Penrhyndeudraeth to Harlech.
14.31 Harlech to Penrhyndeudraeth
15.26 Tywyn to Barmouth.
If travelling on these trains you will have to pay the full fare between these stations.

Please also remember to ensure you either have a free concessionary ticket from a station ticket office or obtain one from the guard. Only if you are issued with a ticket will your presence on the train be counted, and the decision as to whether to reduce services further next year will depend upon how many passengers are counted this year.

28/09/2024

As from Tuesday (October 1st) anybody with a Transport for Wales bus pass can travel for free between Machynlleth and Pwllheli, (excluding the school trains between Tywyn/Barmouth and Harlech/Penrhyndeudraeth.

As some of you may know Transport for Wales had intended to cut winter train services from this winter, specifically the 10.01 to Pwllheli and the corresponding return train. Following an outcry they agreed to actually monitor how many people use that service before revisiting the decision for next year. It is therefore essential that you obtain a free ticket at the ticket office before travelling. Only when a free ticket is issued are you 'counted' and a record made that you used the train service. If you simply show your pass on the train no record is made and TfW will end up thinking the 10.01 train is largely empty. PLEASE make a point of obtaining your free tickets BEFORE travelling so that we can provide evidence that the winter services are indeed well used. Without that evidence those services may well be at threat again next year. If you want to ensure the service is retained make sure you get a proper free ticket. Use it or lose it!

Due to the late running of the the 14.55 train which departed finally at 15.30 there will be a knock-on effect on trains, probably for the rest of the day. The 15.57 train to Pwllheli is likely to be around 30 minutes late. Please check times of trains before travelling for the rest of the day.

Please note:

The 14.55 train to Machynlleth and Birmingham International has been delayed at Porthmadog and is currently predicted to arrive at Barmouth around 15.30. We will update as we receive further information.
