The Tinsel Spider...
A very very long time ago,
Lived a very busy mother and her children, in a small run down cottage. They couldn't afford much as they were quite quite poor. Mum wanted her children to feel the joy of Christmas and felt terrible that she couldn't afford them lovely things. Mum was busy tidying their small cottage, dusting and pulling down all the cobwebs which had gathered in the corners, she swept the spiders out of the cottage. The children had brought in a Christmas tree which they had grown themselves and gleefully placed in with pride, to decorate their humble surroundings.
Off to bed they went, ready for the delicious food their mum had managed to find for the feast of Christmas.
When the house was very quiet, the spiders came back into the house to warm themselves near the embers of the fireplace and noticed the lovely tree, loving grown by the children, tended and now decorating the home. How lovely it looked, splendid place for a spider or two to live. They also noticed that the tree had no ornaments as the family couldn't afford them. The spiders decided to decorate this tree for the children, and spun their delicate webs all through the branches of the tree. A little while later Father Christmas arrived to deliver presents to the children and placed a few simple toys he had made . He noticed the intricate webs in the tree and understood the need for the spiders to have a home. He also understood the mother, which had worked so hard to provide for her children and was exhausted.
With a little Christmas magic he transformed the beautiful webs into shimmering silver and gold... and these shiny webs are what we have come to know as Tinsel....
The humble spider and the hard working mother and her children are remembered with the placing of a Tinsel Spider in the Christmas Tree..
