Itโ€™s bluebell season ๐Ÿ’™

Itโ€™s bluebell season ๐Ÿ’™

Everyone loves bluebells! But how can you distinguish the UK native, Spanish and hybrid species?

Incredibly, almost half of the world's bluebells are found in the UK. They grow in large colonies that cover the ground of woodland edges from April-May.

Native bluebells (๐˜๐˜บ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ-๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ข) are threatened by habitat destruction, harvesting from the wild, and potentially competition from Spanish bluebells (๐˜๐˜บ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข), a garden-escape introduced by the Victorians, which are able to hybridise with UK native bluebells (๐˜๐˜บ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜น ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ข), so it can be difficult to identify true native populations.

The biggest tell is that native bluebells have droopy stems and a sweet scent, while Spanish bluebells are straight-stemmed and unscented.

๐Ÿ’š Bluebells are symbolically associated with gratitude and everlasting love ๐Ÿ’š

[EDIT in response to FAQs:] Spanish and hybrid bluebells still provide a good nectar source, so they are beneficial to pollinators! ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ It's fine if you already have them in your garden for people and wildlife to enjoy. However we want to encourage people to acknowledge the difference between the types of bluebells, and to be aware that if you want to plant new bulbs and your garden is close to natural areas where native bluebells are present, it is preferable to choose to plant native ones, due to the risk of escape or hybridisation with wild bluebells. And, if disposing of garden waste, always do this responsibly.๐ŸŒฑ

UK native bluebells are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981).

Flowers
Don't sit by my grave and say sorry
or place flowers at my place of rest.
Come and join me at my table
when I invite you to be my guest.

Do not tell everyone I was wonderful
when I can no longer hear.
Tell me to my face my friend
because to me it wasn't clear.

Do not shed a tear for me
that is really born from your regrets.
Instead make sure you won't have any,
let us share each others secrets.

Do not stand in a church doorway
and shake the hands of friends,
whilst believing in your heart
that this will make ammends.

Do not bring me flowers
unless I can smell how sweet they are.
Bring them when I'm alive
and not watching from afar.

Sunflowers are such a beautiful flower.
Quick sunflower facts:
-The entirety of a sunflower is edible. Their leaves, stalks, and roots can all be used as food, and were grown in North America before other crops like corn became common. They were milled to create flour, and their seeds roasted and eaten.
-Young sunflowers follow the sun all day, and then reset their position at night to be ready for sunrise. Once fully grown, they stay facing east to attract bees and other pollinators.
-On average, sunflowers grow to be between 6 to 10 feet, but they can grow much taller. The tallest sunflower ever recorded was 30 feet.
-Sunflowers can absorb toxins, including toxic metals and radiation. Following the nuclear disasters of Chernobyl and Fukushima, scientists planted millions of sunflowers to help those areas recover.
They are remarkable plants!

The sunflower is not a flower! ๐ŸŒป Its petals are actually ray flowers and are made up of multiple petals fused together. Ray petals are usually yellow but can sometimes be red or orange.
The number of petals of a sunflower plant is determined on its size. A sunflower has between 34 and 89 petals. Now, look inside the "flower" more closely. Look into what you once thought was the flower and is actually a lot of tiny "flowers". Many... Many... Beautiful and delicate in an alignment beyond harmonic (the geometry of nature). What you thought was a flower, is actually an outline that holds hundreds and hundreds of flowers... The ray florets of sunflower are known as neuters because it consists neither male or female parts in the flower. If the flower contains any of the small strap-shaped flowers in the head of certain composite plants, such as the daisy is called Ray floret.
And if we look at it with the eyes of gardeners, we will realize that each little flower holds within itself, in this golden dust, countless fields of sunflowers.
In biology, this is called an infloration. ๐ŸŒป
