Last week seems so long ago but had an amazing day @hudsonlighting as part of our course training with @londoncollegegardendesign. From learning about the different qualities of light and their effects to the manufacturing process at Hudson and my favourite dark skies compliant lighting which as designers we need to aim for. It is staggering the amount of light pollution that exists across the world in certain areas- if you uplight a tree and birds are nesting then they stay awake all night!! Affects their nesting, their ability to produce offspring and their life span. It gets worse for bats with at the extreme being entombed within a house unable to leave because of garden lights!! It’s time to leave the Miami effect behind and let’s think classy and sensitive. 🌿 Weather Whiplash, Anyone? 🌿 Is everyone ready for this rollercoaster weather? From glorious double-digit temperatures—perfect for a bit of chainsawing and marveling at mycorrhiza in action—to snow just a couple of days later! And by the end of the week? We’re back to warmer days again. British weather at its finest! While out in the garden, I spotted snowdrops already in bloom and even an Exochorda x macrantha starting to bud—nature never fails to surprise us. Today, I made a trip to West Kington Nurseries Ltd and couldn’t have been more grateful that everything I needed was tucked away under cover. The outdoor plants? Snuggled up under a blanket of snow! We’re still planting bulbs and braving the cold—stay warm and keep enjoying the beauty of winter gardens. 🌞 Who else has been soaking up this glorious warm weather? It's like the plants are as confused as we are – still blooming and showing off when they’d usually be winding down! 🌸 But, winter is coming, and it's time to give those precious plants a nice warm blanket. This week, I stocked up on a bale of straw to wrap around the crowns and add an insulating layer to the soil, ready for the colder days ahead. 🥶 I've also brought my more delicate plants indoors (as many as I could squeeze in!). But my Ensete ventricosum banana? It's staying outside with a bit of extra TLC – a thick layer of straw, a snug wrap for the planter, and a cosy spot near the house. What an amazing day yesterday in Devon with @jgm_gardenmaintenance learning the art of scything with Simon Fairlie and a gorgeous lunch provided by Jasmine. It poured down and we were soaked by lunch but it felt so good to be on the land and learning from Simon who is an amazing character and it feels very special to learn from someone with so much knowledge. As a company we always expand our knowledge and skill set and it’s feels so good to learn an old art and to use it within our work for the maintenance of wildflower meadows. Obviously we are not going to be scything acres but domestic situations it is perfect and it is so gentle in the environment and with species plus it also allows the butterfly pupae to remain in the base of the grasses to overwinter as scything doesn’t cut too short next to the soil compared to machinery. With our summer months zooming by, it feels like we haven't had a true summer with all the rain, wind, and dull, cool days. 🥶 To lift our spirits, here’s some cheer from a wildflower meadow in a client’s garden. The grasses are now seeding and turning, and the wildflowers are beginning to flourish. Taking a moment to stop, look, and listen to the hum of life within the meadow brings me so much joy!🥰 As everyone has noted, the amount of insect life is notably depleted this year, more than usual. As gardeners, homeowners, and designers, we can support our environment by creating spaces within our gardens for every single species, right down to the ants 🐜. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! For me, I treated myself to a getaway in the New Forest after a busy couple of months with ongoing build projects. I needed some forest bathing to refresh. Despite the cold chill and sudden downpours (fire in June!), I had fun with some very tame horseback riding Western-style in a paddock, enjoyed gorgeous walks, and was amazed that the wooden bridge over the stream is still there after 50+ years.
