EX- - Forewarned is Forearmed (2024)

There's a dirty little secret that few will mention about punk rock.

It's that when the first flushes of youth are put in the rear view mirror, and with it a more mature and experienced attituded replaces the thrashing s***k rock that comes in gobs and spurts, there's very often a purple patch of songwriting that surfaces.

AOP. Adult Orientated Punk.

It's a period in a bands existence where the musicianship bar is raised alongside the ability to write more nuanced lyrics.

And it always hits the spot when that time arrives, but only when the fire of what fuels punk is still very much present.

Which brings us to the album from Ex- because this is where they are now on "Forewarned is Forearmed".

It's glam tinged punk that has picked up some new wave shading along the way towards settling on their own take on what mature, but still vibrant, rock should sound like in the 21st Century.

It sounds like an album a band signed in 1977 would put out in the early 80s when they were a few albums deep into a career that had seen them take on the mantle of bona fide rock stars.

And yet that's not to claim that it is anchored in the past.

Everything comes around again, and as the punk titans of yesteryear are enjoying a resurgence, and the attention of a younger audience, the album sounds extraordinarily fresh.

If Ex- had started off their career in '77 then it would be easy to imagine them on the road with the big punk names that are touring now.

Or possibly appearing on the 2025 Summer Sessions gig alongside S*x Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Undertones, The Skids and The Rezillos. Slip them into the middle of that line up and no one could claim that there was a quality dip.

This is a release that could sit comfortably with what The Damned or The Stranglers have been putting out over the last few years. And if you rushed out to buy those albums, or others from their punk peers, then this album from Ex- should be considered too.
