In amongst the flower farm madness...
I've been doing a little experiment with my grow lights and heat mats. Chillies sown both on the same day in January.

The first video has had heat mats and grow lights. The second video hasn't had either. The difference is BIG!

I promise these things really do make a difference to your plants! Even the cheap ones! 🫶 And the stronger your plants - the more slug resistant they will be! 🤣 BONUS!

I've also just been gifted the grow light to try in picture 2 from .store
And it's powerful so far! 😯 I actually love it! And it has a clip to hook onto my seed sowing station which is perfect!

I'll be there for you... 🌸🌿💖
I will be forever grateful to these ladies for today. Honestly, I'm totally struggling for words for how they have organised and travelled the length of the actual country to raise my spirits and help me in my push over the line for infrastructure completion!

I am forever in your debt, as I know how gruelling hard work a day on the farm is. I'm talking about sore backs, feet and aching muscles all round. 💪 It's NOT for the faint hearted!

These guys have risen to the challenge and I can't believe how much it's actually looking like a FLOWER FARM!!!

It's almost there!

Thank you to my angels! 😇 I have met these amazing ladies through Instagram. And I can't imagine that I would ever have such lovely friends that would make so much effort for me. I'm totally blown away and to thank them as I totally worked them to the bone 🤭

But I've now repayed them with a lovely takeaway and lots of laughs! 🤣

The FLOWER FARM is coming.... Get ready guys! Spring is nearly here! 🌱

🌸 COSMOS
A seed that I'm currently starting in abundance right now! Cosmos are a daisy shaped flower that can grow around 5ft tall, and will produce an obscene amount of flowers!

When cut right, they will keep producing flowers like it's a bit of a challenge!

My top tips for cosmos...
1. Plant out when well established - but after your last frost date.
2. Ideally start them around 8 weeks before your last frost.
3. Pinch out! Snip the tops off when well established to encourage branching.
4. Feed well!

I grow most shapes and colours of Cosmos but a new variety I'm looking forward to seeing this year is one called Kiiro - a soft, lemon colour which looks dreamy! 🥰

🌸🌱SWEET PEAS🌱🌸
I find sweet peas to be such a marmite flower - you either love them or hate them! There is no in-between.
But, you can't deny that sweet peas are bloody beautiful 😍

My autumn sown sweet peas are looking fab, and I'm about to sow the next round to ensure we have a great succession for early summer of that scent to greet you as you enter the PYO field!

My brain 🧠 can't help it.... I'm starting to get giddy about tomatoes! 🍅

The promise of what's to come this time of year is always so good! And I love to look over what's worked really well in previous years and start to have a think about what I can shake up!

This year I want some BIG harvests. Stuff that we can turn into sauces and chutneys that we can use all year around!

I'm going to grow more than I've ever done before! I really do love a challenge! 🤭

The greenhouse babies were at last treated to a bit of sun last week ☀️😎
Honestly, they really deserved it!! I definitely also enjoyed my first chance to begin photosynthesizing again!

In the greenhouses right now:

🌱Corncockle
🌱Cornflowers
🌱 Calendula
🌱Ammi
🌱Eryngium
🌱Daucus
🌱Sweet Peas
🌱Snapdragons

These were ALL autumn sown but in the next couple of weeks you can get back on the sowing train!!! I can't wait! 👌

Although, I am debating if I should do a couple of earlier sweet peas today 🤔

As we are about to embark on our new chapter, it's definitely important to look back and see how this has all come about. The journey over the years has been amazing, challenging and has had SO many ups and downs!

It's allowed me to make new friends throughout this world of instagram and learn an incredible amount from the most knowledgeable and inspiring people. You have shown me what is possible!

I've also watched my little girl become confident and knowledgeable about food, flowers and nature - she doesn't even know she is! I'm so thankful that this came to us during lockdown when time outside was such a premium, we felt like the luckiest family in the world.

All my favourite photos are from the allotment. It shows us the memories and happiness that it's brought us over the years. A place we shall never take for granted.

It's changed and evolved over that time and I'm sure over the next five years it will continue to do so. But whatever it looks like, it will always be our place.

🌸 Wirral Flower Farm - Phase 1(almost!) Complete! 🙌

24 beds are currently in place at the farm (7 yet to be mulched... Progress)

The field has held up well during the storms and snow that the winter period has so far thrown at us too. No serious flooding - which has been brilliant.

The w**d membrane is killing off the grass (also was a concern 🤣 mainly because I'm concerned about everything!) see pic 3. This was a great discovery this week!

And myself and are cooking up something together for a launch 👀 watch this space!

Phase 2 hopefully starts this Saturday now the weather is looking a bit clearer and hoping to start getting more beds in action in the drier areas of the field.

January while frustrating in terms of progress, is shaping up to be GREAT! 🙌 But, I just still can't imagine what the transformation to this field will be in just six months when it is full of flowers.... It will ALL be worth it!

I have an allotment plot in Wirral, UK - which will be solely dedicated back to growing fruit and veg for my family in 2025.

In May I'll also be opening Wirral Flower Farm! The first polyculture, pick your own flower farm in Wirral which will be open to the public from May to October! A very new and exciting venture!

I'll be showing you all the goings on in both the farm and the allotment this year, and I can't wait to see what this year brings after the rollercoaster of 2024.

Ever wondered what it takes to start a flower farm from scratch? 🌸 Here's how I'm turning an empty field into Wirral's first flower farm – sharing the exact steps I'm following to turn this into a dream come true! 1. Layout - deciding on a layout for the farm based on my initial knowledge of the field. I'm getting the bones of this layout in place and spending the winter seeing where the wetter/drier parts naturally are before deciding on the final planting schemes. 2. Water - creating a plan to collect as much water as possible! And working out how much we might need per square meter 🫠 my aim is to have 15 IBCs in total! 3. Manure! 💩 Sourcing some great mulch to get into our growing spaces in the heavy clay soil so the worms can start to work their magic! Improving the soil is my main focus! Healthy soil = healthy plants = less pests! 4. Composting - see step 3 - we are obviously going to need LOADS of this and the more we can make on site the better! We'll know exactly what it contains! 5. Revenue Streams - lots of people forget that once you have grown the flowers you actually have to sell them in order for your business to work. Creating workshops, courses and getting them on sale is already helping to raise the profile of the farm! Ready to welcome visitors next year! I'm new to this game and I'm hoping some of this will help anyone wanting to take the leap or is at the same gut-wrenching, fear-inducing stage I'm at!
