Forgotten in the land of Egypt - 27th February

Forgotten in the land of Egypt is a play about grief, faith, and the climate crisis; the crashing confluence of past and present; the refusal to heed the warnings we’re given. It’s a play about loneliness and the longing for human connection.

This production is in conjunction with the Sir Peter Shaffer Charitable Foundation and Stage One.

The Place Theatre’s very own youth company, BRAVE presents - Platform - 13th-15th February.

It's 2023. Charlie, Alex and Olivia are growing up in the post Covid world and things are starting to get weird. Charlie is battling with conspiracy theories, Olivia can’t get anyone to like her posts and Alex is just a troll (In more ways than one).

Created at the height of the pandemic, Platform delves into the darker side of social media.

Kin - 6th and 7th Feb

This darkly comic tale examines how a sibling can be both your best friend and your worst enemy. And asks the question: how can you forgive the past when you can’t even agree what it looks like?

‘A taut and riveting examination of the complex nature of sibling love.’ (The List)

Audience reviews for Kin at Bedfringe, July 2024:

“It was funny and moving all at once. Very well done”

“Authentic, credible and honest”

“Really enjoyed Kin, particularly the two fantastic actresses. What an interesting play”

Whole - 23rd April

“My sister smells of wood smoke, warm earth, oranges, and dust… we buried you in a wood, underneath an oak tree. There are bluebells there in April.“

Whole is a show about two people – one of them is on stage, the other isn’t.
Emma has been looking for a way to fill the gaping hole her identical twin sister’s death has left behind.

A unique and intimate experience that uses visual imagery, storytelling, and inspiration from an anarchic ginger cat, Whole explores a tender, messy love story about siblings, loss and the healing power of a creative mission.

Alas! Poor Yorick - 12th April

If the Two Ronnies were cast as the Gravediggers in Shakespeare’s Hamlet re-written by Samuel Beckett you might have something like Ridiculusmus's “Alas! Poor Yorick”.

Mixing the mundane with the magical; moments of banal idiocy are interspersed with ones of cinematic elegance to an underscore of groans, grunts and the odd Shakespearean aside.

Our Story

Celebrating our 15th Anniversary in 2018, since 2003 The Place Theatre has developed a reputation among audiences in Bedford and the surrounding community as one of the best places to see high-quality and cutting-edge professional ‘fringe’ theatre, as well as being the home of Bedford’s best amateur and student theatre companies.

A year round programme of theatre, music and film presenting a varied programme of work for everyone in the community, spanning children’s theatre, folk music, musical theatre, comedy, as well as our core drama programme. We are dedicated to presenting work with a political edge, bringing the highest quality small-scale professional work and increasing the representation of diverse voices and experiences on the stage in Bedford.

Look for our annual thematic weeks supporting Holocaust Memorial (Jan), Refugee Week (Jun), LGBT history month (Feb) as well as our ongoing strand of work MINDSCAPES which explores multiple aspects of the lived experience of mental health, from professional theatre companies around the country.

The venue holds the Family Arts Standards, and we’re really proud of our #dramasinpyjamas initiative encouraging families and young people to share theatre in our friendly and informal atmosphere.
