We're approaching the end of 2024 so we're going to publish "postcards" of this year's highlights

Let's start with TUGGING AT THE SEA

“If I was a moon, I’d tug at the sea, to draw the land piece by piece closer to me…”

A strange place where once welcoming people are now barricading themselves.
Bizarre politicians arguing about slogans.
Paper boats, of all sizes and colours.
Who are the real invaders?

Using a fragmented narrative, physical theatre, songs and direct testimonies, Tugging At The Sea asks audiences to recognise the absurdity of the propaganda against asylum seekers. Thanks to a collaboration with visual artist , the stage was covered in paper boats, as a celebration of shared humanity.

The show started as a collaboration with and was developed during our free weekly classes with our amazing community ensemble of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

We performed the show to sold out venues at and and we hope to do it again in 2025

Thanks Director and lead facilitators and for their amazing work

And thanks to for her beautiful projections!

Finally thanks to our young stage managers and !

Our Story

Celebrating our 15th Anniversary in 2018, since 2003 The Place Theatre has developed a reputation among audiences in Bedford and the surrounding community as one of the best places to see high-quality and cutting-edge professional ‘fringe’ theatre, as well as being the home of Bedford’s best amateur and student theatre companies.

A year round programme of theatre, music and film presenting a varied programme of work for everyone in the community, spanning children’s theatre, folk music, musical theatre, comedy, as well as our core drama programme. We are dedicated to presenting work with a political edge, bringing the highest quality small-scale professional work and increasing the representation of diverse voices and experiences on the stage in Bedford.

Look for our annual thematic weeks supporting Holocaust Memorial (Jan), Refugee Week (Jun), LGBT history month (Feb) as well as our ongoing strand of work MINDSCAPES which explores multiple aspects of the lived experience of mental health, from professional theatre companies around the country.

The venue holds the Family Arts Standards, and we’re really proud of our #dramasinpyjamas initiative encouraging families and young people to share theatre in our friendly and informal atmosphere.
