I will be holding the latest of my 'town hall' style meetings this Thursday, November 10th, in Clapham village hall from 5.30pm until 7pm.

At these meetings I give a brief address covering local and national issues followed by questions from the audience. These meetings are a great opportunity for me to hear about the most pressing issues facing local communities as well as giving you an opportunity to quiz me on a range of topics.

I hope to see you in Clapham on Thursday.

Today is International Women's Day. Did you know it dates back to 1911 when it was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19th March. The date of March 8th has been used since 1914, when women across Europe held rallies against war and for women’s rights. A suffrage march in London on that date led to the arrest of Sylvia Pankhurst. Who better to share with you today than pioneering Bedford suffagist, Amy Walmsley.

Born in 1867, she was the principal of the Froebel Kindergarten School & Training College (later Bedford Training College for Teachers) from 1896-1927. She stood unsuccessfully for parliament in 1918, the first year in which women had the vote, and in 1922 she became the first woman to be elected to serve on Bedfordshire County Council. She died in 1928. A blue plaque commemorating her was unveiled at 14, The Crescent, Bedford on 14th December 2018, one hundred years to the day after women voted in a general election for the first time. Women of Bedford are working hard to have a statue of Amy erected near Bedford’s Butterfly Bridge.
