🌿POSSESSION - Kanich Khajohnsri 🌿

Thai artist Kanich Khajohnsri has created POSSESSION, a new installation including sound, photography and sculpture at the Palm House in Botanic Gardens. The work explores customs and rituals in both Thailand and Northern Ireland around spirituality and how these practices connect us to the land. The artist’s research was inspired by the time he spent in Northern Ireland visiting burial sites and prehistoric stone circles where ancient people binded with the spirit world, and studying mapmaking and the construction of the nation state and national borders.

In Thailand, people believe that (ancestral) spirits, or ‘Phee’, can possess places, buildings, sacred and mythical spaces, the land and materials that it is composed of, and that they should be acknowledged and respected. The artist contrasts the ability of spirits to make themselves at home in the physical world with the current displacement of people across the globe due to geographic conflict, economics, or their political beliefs.

POSSESSION invites visitors to contemplate the layers of ownership and belonging that exist in our world, and find temporary moments of grounding and connection to the spirit, material, and natural world.

POSSESSION is part of the Belfast 2024 celebrations and is generously supported by Belfast City Council, and British Council. With special thanks to the Belfast City Council Botanic Parks team.

Red Sky at Night is a festival of new art commissions across Belfast by international artists Zuza Golińska (Poland), Kanich Khajohnsri (Thailand), Kasper Lecnim & Irmina Rusicka (Poland), Dina Mimi (Palestine), Aisling O’Beirn (Ireland) and Leandros Ntolas (Greece), curated by Household.

Ahead of this weekend's world premiere of Touch, Hear, Feel - we caught up with choreographer and visual artist Helen Hall to find out about the inspirations behind her work and what audiences can expect from this ground-breaking performance.

Touch, Hear, Feel is an immersive dance performance that reconsiders the way we experience art, beyond the visual, by contemplating how we can engage our other senses. The dance piece choreographed by Helen and performed by herself and two other dancers, explores the theme of touch and the felt sense.

Touch, Hear, Feel was developed in a series of co-designed workshops with the blind and partially sighted community, in collaboration with the , and . Their diverse perspectives and lived experiences form the heart of the project.

After the performances in November, the set will be re-imagined as a multi-sensory installation. An accompanying audio narrative, featuring the voices of blind and partially sighted people, will provide insights into their experiences of touch.

💵 Lament - Zuza Golińska 💵

For Lament, Polish artist Zuza Golińska is exploring the deep emotional connection we can have to architecture. During her time in Belfast, the artist was drawn to the states of disrepair and transition occupied by many of the historic buildings in the city centre and ideas surrounding the public monument. For this new artwork, Zuza has collaborated with St Anne’s Cathedral choir to perform a lament to the Bank of Ireland art deco building on Royal Avenue as it awaits a multi-million pound renovation to become the Belfast Stories visitor attraction.

This is a once-off, limited capacity event. To secure a place book a free ticket via the Eventbrite link in our bio 🔺

*Free and no booking required*

Benign Land is a new artwork by Netherlands based artist Leandros Ntolas set in the imposing site of Carlisle Memorial Church.

The artist has created an evocative installation that incorporates his long standing research into perception, architecture and light, and responds to the specificities of the site, while expanding his current research into creating interactive experiences using the medium of video games.

The installation culminates in an interactive gaming experience on a large screen that invites the viewer to inhabit a fictional landscape that interweaves layers of history, folklore, literature and music relating to the land.

A soundtrack composed in collaboration with Belfast based sound artist and lecturer John D’Arcy accompanies the work.

are hiding 202 unique, handmade ceramic ‘hagstones’ across Belfast’s alleyways, representing the 202-kilometre alleyway network and the people and stories that make it special.

But this treasure hunt is just the beginning. Their team is attempting to walk every alleyway in Belfast—something that’s never been done before! 🧵🎉 THE WEE SWAP - THIS SUNDAY! 🎉🧵

Date: Sunday 13 October
Venue: Banana Block, East Belfast

Join us at The Wee Swap, where young families can donate gently-used clothes and toys their children have outgrown and swap them for some new-to-you treasures. This is a fantastic opportunity to refresh your kids’ wardrobes and toy chests while promoting the values of reusing and recycling within our community.

Plus, it’s kind on the wallet! We’ll also have a line-up of creative activities to engage the little ones and help them see the positive impact they are having by taking part.

This volunteer-led initiative is built on the simple ethos: ‘Sustainable Community builds a Sustainable Planet.’ By participating, you’re not just swapping and donating items; you’re contributing to a larger movement towards a more sustainable future for everyone, especially our young people.
