We have had an overwhelming response to this exhibition with many people asking to know more about what was behind the exhibition and how to contact the artist to enquire about commissioning a portrait, or giving a future portrait as a Christmas present. Tony has responded as follows:
"Most of the paintings in this exhibition were made over a period of about six weeks. The self-portraits mostly date back a year or more, although a couple (and a few not shown) were done in gaps between the portraits.
Although the time-frame for making this exhibition's worth of paintings seems (to me, as I write) ridiculously short, most of the portraits were made fairly quickly: the idea was simply to make a painting of each person which would be a record of our encounter, on that day, in that light, for that much time. Each session lasted about an hour and-a-half. If I wasn't happy with what we had once the sitter had left then I'd try to resolve things with the help of a photo. I try not to work from photos in general, but sometimes it's needed. I managed, I think, to get each painting to a stage where it could be left; none are 'finished' in the traditional sense. There's only one in the room which doesn't feel right, but I'm not saying which one.
I'd like to thank all the people who sat for me for this exhibition. Some are family and friends, others I'd never met before. Sitting as still as possible is much harder than it looks, but every sitter was patient, and no-one complained. Lastly, special thanks to Pippa for her support and for offering me the chance to make a new set of work which I wouldn't have made otherwise.
If you'd like me to paint you, or someone you know, please get in touch to talk about what's involved. Prices start from around £300."
