During WWI, a large contingent of Inns of Court Officers’ Training Corps (IOC OTC) was billeted in Berkhamsted 1914-19. They camped at the area now known as Kitchener's Fields, near the Castle, as the men dug practice trenches in the nearby woodland, before being sent off to fight on the Western Front. At this time, the Court House was used as an Orderly Room. In 1918, the Spanish Flu epidemic reached Berkhamsted. The IOC Hospital at the Beeches on Kings Road could not accommodate all the patients, and the Court House was also used as an overflow hospital. Many died of the flu, and the disease did not spare the nursing staff. Sister Maude Cottingham, Matron at the Beeches, who probably oversaw the overflow ward at the Court House, died of flu in 1918. The men of the OTC were so moved by her death in service, hundreds of miles from her home in the north of Ireland, that they paid for her grave in Rectory Lane Cemetery.

Until the 1660s, the Court House served as Berkhamsted's town hall and court. Over the years its use has changed. In 1838 the Court House became the home of Berkhamsted's National School

Up until the 19th century, only the wealthy could afford to pay for an education for their children. National Schools were founded by the National Society for Promoting Religious Education, a Church of England initiative to provide elementary education children from poor families. The cottage next door at 6 Back Lane (now Church Lane) was built for the schoolmaster. After the 1870 Education Act, the Bourne Charity School children (now Per Tutti restaurant) merged with the National School, and the Court House was not large enough. New schools were built in Berkhamsted – the Victoria Church of England Boys’ School was built in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, followed by Victoria Girls’ School in the early 1900s.

How did the Court House get its name?

There's been a house on this site in Berkhamsted since Tudor times, maybe longer, but nobody knows the exact date it was built. In 1618, King James I and VI granted a Royal Charter to Berkhamsted, giving the town the right to hold a Court of Records in the house next to St Peter’s Church. This is where the courts of the Manor and Honour of Berkhamsted met to hear ‘all pleas, actions, suites or offences against the laws and liberty of the manor.’ Berkhamsted’s Common Council (or Corporation) also kept the standard weights and measures here, which were used to help settle any trading disputes on Berkhamsted Market. The Corporation passed bye-laws and held a court to deal with petty offences, and could impose fines, penalties and imprisonment. The Corporation eventually discontinued its work in the 1660s.
