trading post with a mere 6 bedrooms. This is a far cry from the 87 bedrooms now under its roof; however the charm and character of the building are still intact. Being independently run, The Holt is able to adopt an innovative approach, tailoring is services to suit the needs of every guest. Diners can relax and enjoy the ambiance of the award winning AA Rosette Du Vall’s Restaurant which offers extensive a la Carte and Table d’hôte menus. Tales From The Past at The Holt Hotel 👻

Since 1475, The Holt Hotel has welcomed travellers, but beware – you may encounter more than just history here!

Our infamous mid-seventeenth French guest, Claude Duval, the "Highwayman,” is said to linger near Room #3, adding a touch of eerie charm to The Holt’s storied halls.

When times grew hard, Duval reportedly turned to the lucrative business of highway robbery. True to his French flair, he was known for his eye-catching style: a curly wig, black hat, and eye mask. With a reputation for chivalry, he’d stop coaches, rob the husband of any lady who caught his eye, and then, with his henchman playing mandolin, ask the lady to dance in exchange for keeping her jewels.

After his capture, even noblewomen petitioned for his life, but Duval met his fate at Tyburn in 1670. Legend has it, though, that his spirit returned to haunt The Holt, where he once spent his spoils. Today, guests report sounds of hoofbeats, shadowy figures and the feeling of being watched near the staircase.
