We had a well attended and beautiful Sound Lounge this afternoon , with poetry, stories and music surrounding the theme ‘Journey’.
Courage, creativity, inspiration and reminiscence filled up the space that we held and everyone felt moved by one another’s contributions.

It really reminds us why we do this, and why we hold such events in our local community. Thank you to Sam and Stu at TFGL allowing us to do this in your wonderful space.

If you feel to support us, please let us know if you’d like to make a donation as we are entirely self-funded at the moment - donations go to art materials, marketing & advertising, etc. - to enable us to keep this running.

It was great to listen to some truly original music and hear their inspiring styles, as well as gaining insight into extraordinary minds and people’s experiences in the creative world.
Thanks to for bringing such a great community of craftspeople together to support this event, and having us on board to organise the live music and talks segments.
Thank you to everyone who attended this festival! 🙌🏻

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION @ CREATED FESTIVAL

Bex Simon has long been interested in the mathematics of the natural world. After receiving a scholarship from QEST (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) she studied five different courses in geometry at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts. This enabled her to create a new contemporary style Geometalism of combining traditional compass drawn geometry, laser cutting into metal plates, and hand forging components, to create a wonderful contrast of old and new techniques.

Bex’s logo shows a triangle which is the geometric symbol for fire. A circle is a symbol of unity and the infinite ‘whole’ in both nature and geometry.  Geometry is about togetherness and being one with the natural world, which is a perfect representation of her work and its connection to things happening around us.

Throughout the ages Artists reflected what was going on in culture and society. Bex recognises that a new contemporary movement is now required amongst the Artist Blacksmiths, and this is why she uses the term Artsmith to distinguish her new style which she calls Geometalism. She is unconstrained in her approach to design, drawing inspiration from limitless sources of research mixing geometric shapes and textures. Her Sculptures, gates and Public Art tell stories relative to the surrounding environment.

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION @ CREATED FESTIVAL

Jane Sharkey is a multidisciplinary artist, living for the last three years on Lundy. She considers herself a crafter and a walker.

Crafting activities are wide ranging and often linked with Lundy; weaving with wool from the island sheep, land art using found objects, basket making from ghost nets.

Jane has just completed an MA in Fine Art where her work centred on walking as an artistic practice. This socially engaged practice explored how site-specific performance can deepen visitors’ connections to the landscape. Through creative interactions, she helps visitors uncover the layers of history, stories, and natural elements that shape the environment. Themes of journeys and pilgrimage were central to this work.

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION @ CREATED FESTIVAL

Libby Mornement is a Contemporary Cyanotype Artist using the alchemy of Iron solutions reacting with sunshine to produce photographic blueprints.

One of the earliest (and most environmentally friendly) photographic techniques, Cyanotype involves coating paper with iron solutions to create a mildly photosensitive surface. After exposure to UV and a water rinse, areas where the light has been blocked remain white, while exposed areas turn an insoluble ‘Prussian Blue.’

Expect plenty of Libby’s signature framed originals in a palette of blues from its hints to its depths and shaped by a childhood by the sea and a passion for swimming.

Always happy to share cyanotype insights with creatives, collectors and the curious alike, Libby sells her Cyanotypes worldwide, and recently filmed a demonstration for the BBC.

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION @ CREATED FESTIVAL

As a mature student and following a formal education and successful career Managing Hospitality and Conference facilities for businesses in the Capital, Llinos Gale started her creative journey when she enrolled on an Access to Art and Design course. A Degree in Three Dimensional Design followed, at Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College, where she specialised in Ceramics, highlights of which included a Wedgewood Clay Bursary and exhibiting her work at New Designers, at London Design Centre.

On graduating, and still with a young family she worked in the education sector, sharing her passion for pottery with young people in schools, and Colleges in Hampshire and as part of the local Adult Education Programme. This role grew and by combining her creative and business skills she took on the planning of several events and exhibitions, latterly starting 7 Artists, a Hampshire based exhibition group for artists and makers.

Designing and making her own range of ceramics is a relatively new venture and has predominantly cantered around textured decorative pieces inspired by coastal finds. Llinos’ work is sold through curated events and selected art and craft galleries, including the Barony Centre, West Kilbride and The Maltings in Farnham, both designated craft towns.

Three years ago after years of renovation she relocated their home and studio to the historic Devon quay town of Bideford. In December 2021 they opened London House Studio & Gallery, where they sell the work of local artists and makers, offer pottery classes and courses and continue to spread the joy of making.

Llinos is also the founder of so will be sharing with us her motivations and aspirations for the festival.

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION @ CREATED FESTIVAL

Making leather and making works from leather is a precise, highly skilled craft, currently on the critically endangered list of crafts in the UK. Red (Adam) doesn’t use industrial methods, believing them to be uniform, alienating, monotonous, boring and if not done with a sublime degree of integrity, incredibly environmentally damaging. He developed his knowledge and skills as a leatherworker through interaction with some London based saddlers and leather workers in his youth. He went on to learn more from traditional ancient practices including the Sami in Sweden and Native American peoples, he spent a number of years working at Ruskin Mill - teaching the full leather process, alongside some intriguing fine art production. He runs a micro tannery and leather work studio from Rosie and Reds Art and Leather, producing leather, sheepskins, cow skins, and makes from leather: unique bags, belts, key fobs, hip flasks, aprons, etc. and can repair leather items.

There was poetry, humorous sharing of experiences, song and even a singing bowl session by Rose to close the afternoon.
