Just thought we’d sent a happy Hello from Birkenhead Priory today. Priory staff are onsite today doing necessary maintenance and cleaning so that it’s all spruced up and ready for reopening on Wednesday 12th February at 12.00pm. (Not long to go now).

Anyway, as I was walking from the car park to St Mary’s church grounds, I spied some beautiful snowdrops and daffodils and felt so cheered by these wonderful reminders that the cold of winter WILL end and Spring time will return.

As one of the first flowers of spring, snowdrops are thought to symbolise new beginnings, hope, rebirth and the ability to overcome challenges.

What a gorgeous day it’s been today. It’s been chilly but bright and sunny here at Birkenhead Priory.

We hope that you’ve also had a good day and we’re so looking forward to welcoming you onto our incredible, nearly 900 year old Benedictine Priory site very soon.

Photo below features St Mary’s Tower and facade (c.1819 to 1974). Visitors can climb 101 steps to achieve spectacular views of the Liverpool skyline, the River Mersey, Cammell Laird’s shipyards and beyond.

Free entry to Priory site.

There are TEN days before Birkenhead Priory reopens on Wednesday 12th February from 12.00pm to 4.00pm.

For those of you who are new to our incredible site or to those who would enjoy a reminder, we hereby begin our annual, TEN REASONS TO VISIT BIRKENHEAD PRIORY!

We’ll share a photograph captured recently of one different aspect of this site each day. Our posts will also feature snippets from the fascinating story of the “black monks of Birkenhead” who rowed the first ferry across the Mersey for nearly 400 years and offered hospitality to travellers and those in need from this beautiful Benedictine Priory.

REASON ONE:
Our ‘Green Man’, as he is known or ‘foliate head’ as he would have been known over 800 years ago positioned beside the fireplace in the Great Hall of the Western Range.

There has been much discussion during previous posts about whether he is actually a ‘foliate head’ or Green Man, as the minimal amount of foliage about his head and his calm, noble expression raises doubts. Additionally we have previously discussed why, when and also who would have placed him here beside the fireplace of the Great Hall in a Benedictine Priory during the late 1200’s.

Green Men: Pre-Christian pagan traditions and superstitions, particularly those related to nature and tree worship, were still influential in the early Middle Ages and so many ‘Green Men’ are found in medieval churches & Priories. There is a foliate head at Bolton Abbey, Lancaster Priory & Tewkesbury Abbey amongst many others.

Another theory that is also beginning to gain increasing credibility is that this impressive sculpture is not actually a ‘Green Man’ at all but a representative of St Christopher, (the Patron Saint of Travellers) as he bears a striking resemblance. Additionally his position besides the fire in the Great Hall where passengers of the Priory’s first ‘ferry across the Mersey service’ would have been accommodated seems appropriate.

Whatever his identity or history, our Green Man’s striking image definitely inspires us - staff, volunteers and visitors, to wonder and debate amongst ourselves so maybe that is his purpose here today at Birkenhead Priory.

The Western Range is the only section of the Priory site in ruins.

🚍✨ Yesterday, we had a special visitor at Start Yard—a beautifully restored vintage bus! This classic ride was here to pick up a group from a National Heritage Fund meeting we hosted, before taking them on a tour of some of Birkenhead’s most historic spots, including the iconic Birkenhead Park 🏞️.

Birkenhead and the Wirral are packed with incredible history, and it’s amazing to see more efforts to celebrate and promote the rich heritage of our area. With so much in the pipeline for heritage and tourism, exciting things are ahead!

If you love classic transport, make sure to visit the Wirral Transport Museum & Heritage Tramway 🚋—just a short trip from us! You can explore vintage buses, trams, and even take a ride on a heritage tram through Birkenhead. Check the website for when they are opening.

I’m delighted to share that these 3 paintings will be included as part of the forthcoming ‘CELEBRATION OF WIRRAL’ exhibition at StARTyard from the end of this week.

Start Yard, 108 Church St, Birkenhead, CH41 5JA

All 3 are acrylic on canvas, 2 of which were painted on the beach in the summer of last year. (Did I mention summer?! Feels like a distant memory!)

My own interpretation of time captured on Thurstaston Beach and in Leasowe Bay.

Do come down to see the array of work by fellow artists, celebrating our beautiful peninsula.
