We are delighted to host the team at The Philosophers’ Yard again this year with their first event of 2025: Capitalism.

With special contributions from Professor Adele Atkinson and Dr. Kristian Niemietz and a musical performance from Dahlia Rae, all are invited to this relaxed evening of discussion and reflection on our financial well-being.

🎁 The Exchange 2024 Wrapped: Heritage 🎁

As the custodians of this beautiful art deco building, we are fascinated by our local heritage at The Exchange.

We've welcomed so many of you to our heritage tours to explore the history of the Birmingham Municipal Bank, and we were delighted to participate in this year's Birmingham Heritage Week celebrations.

During Birmingham Heritage Week, we received the Renaissance Award from The Birmingham Civic Society for The University of Birmingham's building restoration. We also announced Unlocking the Vaults, a brand new, two-year project funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Through this project, we will work with the community and local archives to uncover the stories of the bank and preserve its history through several creative interpretations for future visitors.

🎁 The Exchange 2024 Wrapped: Booktober 🎁

Our October was all about the written word this year.

A whole month of all things reading and writing centered around special project True Voyage is Return with writer Phillip Holyman, with local writers creating brand new work at The Exchange.

We welcomed authors, booksellers, silent booklovers, literature festivals, creative writing educators, poets and performers for a vibrant month of creativity.

Wasn't it a blast? πŸš€πŸš€

🎁 The Exchange 2024 Wrapped: Families🎁

The Exchange is a proud hub for free educational activities in the city centre - and we love spending the day with families from across Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Together, we have learned about how we can explore the world underground with our engineering department, discovered what our bodies are made of with our Anatomists and built armies of robots, studied the history of The Exchange, enjoyed reading and writing and crafts and so much more!

We especially thank everyone who has taken part in our workshops this year and our amazing artists and facilitators for making these experiences so special.

🎁 The Exchange 2024 Wrapped: Exhibitions 🎁

It's been a busy year packed with events, and we also welcomed visitors to a raft of provoking exhibitions in the Vaults and the South Entrance.

We explored the impact of AI with our researchers in AI Dialogues, and how it can help us find the one with Looking For Love by Fast Familiar. We also worked with our colleagues at Ikon Gallery and visual artist Exodus Crooks on their latest moving image piece We need 2 tlk, which considers how advances in phone technology have affected how we communicate.

Back above ground, the South Entrance has been home to Thrift Radiates Happiness. This stunning archival photography exhibit looked back at The Exchange when it first opened as the headquarters of the Birmingham Municipal Bank in 1933!

What was your favourite exhibit from the year?

🎁 The Exchange 2024 Wrapped: Research 🎁

AI FUTURES has been a fascinating year! We invited our University of Birmingham researchers to share how they are using or considering Artificial Intelligence in their work across multiple subjects and disciplines.

We explored how AI impacts a vast array of subjects and everyday issues: from the care sector, the arts, and global politics, to early development psychology, bioscientific lake research, and major steps forward in medicine.

Our huge thanks to the brilliant researchers who have collaborated with us on this programme, the artists who have supported us with so many interpretations and activities all year long, and of course to the thousands of visitors who have joined us to share in knowledge and experiences and contribute to the discussion.
