⚡️ The evolution of JDS Weddings ⚡️

I'll be honest, I never thought that after the year 2021, I'd even be saying this. Photography changed and evolved at weddings, going online with streams for people who couldn't be there. I started to help couples out with live streams, followed by recording the ceremony and speeches as long form files to give away.

Starting in 2022, I opened my books to solely video work. Having spent years with a skilled freelance videographer in a previous company, I had the knowledge and equipment to deliver.

Now let's spring forward to 2024. 90% of every booking taken so far has had video included, or instead of photography! The demand for film and reliving your most precious day has exploded, and I couldn't be happier!
I offer video alongside photography as a hybrid package or just film services for the day. I love the process and how similar yet vastly different it is to photography. With the extra equipment to nerd and obsess over, the fluid movements with a gimbal, multicamming those epic wedding ceremonies, I got it down to a T.

If you're looking for an amazing video for your wedding, with my signature artistic style and flair learnt from millions of photographs captured over the years (that's not an overestimation), get in touch to see some reels.

5 Things You’ll Never Hear Me Say as Your Wedding Photographer:

1. “This Lighting Isn’t Good Enough”
Lighting challenges are part of the job, but that’s not your concern. I’ll work with whatever light is available - finding creative solutions to capture stunning photos without making you worry about it.

2. “That Dress Is Unflattering”
Your dress is a reflection of your style and makes you feel beautiful. My focus is to capture your confidence, using the best angles and lighting to showcase how amazing you look without negative commentary.

3. “I Can’t Take That Shot, I Don’t Have the Right Equipment”
Adaptability is key. I come prepared with the tools and skills to capture every moment, no matter the setting. You’ll never hear me blame equipment for missing a shot.

4. “Big Smiles!”
I avoid pushing for fake smiles that don’t feel natural. Instead, I’ll guide you through moments and prompts that bring out your genuine joy, leading to authentic, heartfelt expressions.

5. “I Don’t Think You Would Like This Pose”
Comfort and authenticity are my priorities. I don’t assume what’s best for you - I guide, adjust, and collaborate until we find poses that feel natural and true to your personality.

🎵Oh what a night 🎵
POV: you're my camera witnessing a conga line during the desserts at your wedding.
Singing waiters are hands down the BEST surprise for any wedding. Guests don't know they're there, I didn't know they'd even be there, and the crowd was wild for it!
They'll keep your guests up on their feet throughout the set and create so many beautiful memories.

A little bit of backstory about me!
I've been into photography since around 2010, but have dabbled since 2006 when I took my dad's Nikon film camera in and did my A levels in film photography (yep, digital photography wasn't yet a course).

LIGHTING TECHNICIAN:
After an abysmal A-level experience (blame the lecturer not the student), I gave up photography and studied music for a BA degree. My best mate from college was doing photography at the time and invited me to a few of his shoots to help out. I picked up many skills on the go, learning how lighting impacted images and kick-started my career.

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHER:
From 2011 I started working in a high street printing lab. I developed rolls of film, took mundane passport photos and printed well over 3 million images for customers. The lab had a professional studio upstairs, and 1 day into the job I was given a camera and told a family was coming in for a paid shoot. Baptism by fire! I had to learn on the job and get good real fast, for the sake of my monthly wages.

MA DEGREE:
From learning the ropes at the studio, I studied and got interested in photography in a big way. i applied to my university to do a Masters (MA) degree, which I ended up achieving the highest grade the Uni has ever awarded to a student in the course - my work was even printed in the prestigious British Journal of Photography.

FILM FANATIC:
Throughout it all, I loved shooting film the most. In 2010-2015 film was plentiful and the lab allowed me to print and develop for free. I took what I learnt from colour, exposure and grain and translated that into my current shooting styles for weddings. I love that vintage aesthetic and strive to make my digital pics as un-digital as possible.

DOCUMENTARIAN:
My style and approach to shooting have been honed from my decade of capturing events, model shoots, studio work and private commissions. I love to capture a moment - freezing a "something" happening in time. Anyone can take a nice picture of a single person, but it takes a lifetime of practice to capture a candid, authentic moment evolving in front of your frame. This is what I want in my pictures, this is why I do this!

BONUS: You can absolutely tell if you're a nerd, there are 4 different film cameras in these pictures. I have a problem.

what a venue!
I’ve visited a few times now, couldn’t get enough of the grounds. What a beautiful location to capture your wedding, or in this case a post-wedding photoshoot during the warmer summer months.
Classic country estate wedding locations constantly surprise me, found at the end of huge mile long drives with high trees and grazing cattle.

One from the bucket list!
Ever since I moved my wedding photography business from Cheltenham to Birmingham, one of the most desired and beautiful venues eluded me. This weekend just gone I had the honour of shooting both photography and video for the couple at Shustoke Barn. From a lighting point of view - fantastic! The ceremony frontage is bathed in gorgeous side light, giving such drama to the days most important moments.

I'm totally snowed under at the moment in edits - with a mix of commercial event work and weddings this month, so any couples enquiring I will get in touch within 24 hours, promise!

Let's dive into roll film!

I've been in a blessed position in the past to operate a printing lab for several years. It's where I started to practice photography both as a hobby and also in the studio.

Back in 2010, roll film was dying out and the emergence of camera and consumer DSLR cameras was starting to take hold of the industry. I was in a buying frenzy - getting as much film and vintage cameras as possible before it went out of stock!

I could develop it for free, and print too. This is where I got my love for all things analogue photography. the colours, the way it renders skin tones and contrast, it was all so magical! I've been missing it greatly post-Covid, so have been biding my time before throwing my analogue hat back into the wedding ring.

I'm experimenting with a roll or two at each wedding this year, to compile a film-centric portfolio for future weddings to be booked with. Whilst the cost of shooting an entire day on roll film is prohibitively expensive (over £2,000 in purchase and fees), I'll be combining a few rolls alongside my digital work.

Get ready for a new season of classic photography!

🌺 Imagine being crammed in a room full of women, all filled with anticipation and giggles. The atmosphere is thick with an intoxicating blend of perfume and flowers. It's the bridal bouquet toss - an age-old wedding tradition!

🥂 You're the bride. Clad in your gorgeous bridal gown, your heart is thumping in your chest. The bouquet feels like a promise in your hands. Your ladies, your partners in crime, are waiting, excitement sparkling in their eyes.

💕 The toss happens... and the room erupts with cheer! For a moment, everything else fades. It's just you, your girls, and the pure joy radiating from everyone.

👰 Remember, it's not about catching the bouquet. It's about the shared joy, the love, and the unforgettable memories you create together... That's the real magic of weddings.

📸 Picture this, you're at your wedding, a whirlwind of emotions, family, friends, laughter, and love. It's beautiful chaos, isn't it?

✨ But amidst the celebration, I urge you to take a breath. Steal away with your partner for just 10 minutes. Why?

👰 Because these stolen moments, away from the watchful eyes of loved ones, are magic. As a wedding photographer, I've seen the raw emotion, the silent promises exchanged, the unguarded love - captured forever in a frame.

🌹 It's not just about beautiful portraits, it's about creating private memories amidst public celebration. So, take those precious minutes, they're your memories in the making.

☔ Love isn't always sunny, and sometimes, weddings happen in the rain. But fear not, because with the right preparation, your rainy day nuptials can be just as magical and memorable as any sun-soaked ceremony! Here are five invaluable tips for couples tying the knot in damp conditions.

👰‍♀️1. Plan for the Unexpected: Always have a 'plan B' in place. This could involve booking a venue with an indoor option or hiring a marquee as a precaution. It’s better to have and not need it than need it and not have it!

🤵‍♂️2. Embrace the Moment: Don't let the rain dampen your spirits. Take advantage of the unique photo opportunities it presents. Rain adds dramatic and romantic elements to your wedding photos.

🌂3. Invest in Rainy Day Essentials: Umbrellas can be a great prop and a necessary tool, so why not get them personalized for your wedding? Also, consider providing towels and blankets to keep your guests comfortable and dry.

👞4. Think About Footwear: Heels and wet grass don't mix well. Consider providing cute wellies for your bridal party and remind guests to wear practical footwear.

🎊5. Keep in Mind The Positives: Rain is considered good luck in many cultures and often leads to more intimate and memorable weddings.

So, don't let a little rain dampen your special day. Instead, let it add to the romance and charm of your wedding.

💖Remember, at the end of the day, it's about celebrating love and commitment in all weather conditions. And if you can dance in the rain on your wedding day, you're pretty much prepared for anything that marriage can throw your way!

WHO WEARS A CAPE TO A WEDDING?Well, this bride did, and it was amazing. At Birmingham Botanical Gardens, this intimate wedding was just so much fun! The bride runs a local Vegan FB page, and being a vegan for 8 years now, we connected on many things (mainly which fake meats taste the best). We also had our first kid a few weeks apart from each other, so we've been sharing pics and developmental updates ever since. I love getting to know my couples and finding out that we all have something in common!

FOXTAIL BARNS - What a venue! It was an honour to finally head up north a little bit to this famous venue. Part hotel, part wedding venue, it had fantastic, breathtaking views and vistas. I had seen shots of the wedding ceremony hall multiple times across fellow photographers, but to be inside and see the presentation and thoughtfulness in the construction blew me away. There were spots to hang dresses, bridges to capture beautiful telephoto images and spots for both bridal and groom prep. I can't wait to return there later this year!

10 minutes - 10 portraits! When looking for a photographer for your big day, you NEED to check out their consistency. This can be how they edit contiguously (fancy word right?), how they adapt to changing light and settings, and how they produce a series of images. Here I had a solid 10 minutes to do a little walk around at Elmbridge Farm during sunset with the b&g - and caught some magic!
My top tip for getting these style shots for your own wedding is just to let go. Don't be afraid to be yourself, be silly, be rude, be whoever you are with each other! The natural expressions make it, and it's something that can't be forced.

Sometimes you just want to see how it was made!Sometimes, the natural light at your wedding doesn't play ball. Sometimes it's in the wrong section of the sky for that perfectly lit shot, sometimes it may be raining or baking midday sun.

This is when I bring out flashes and light how I want. Mixing flash with natural light is one of the toughest and most technologically demanding aspects of being a photographer, there's a million different ways to do it, and most look "flash lit" and rubbish. You can see here that I've "hired" a bridesmaid to hold up a wireless 200w flash with a little softbox on it to provide the perfect angle, power, quality and directional source of light needed, just to pop a bit of contrasty light back on to the couple.

This way, They could have their beautiful venue behind them in the picture, have it at any time of the day and get what they want, not what the weather wants.

Albums, let's have the talk...For a little history - I used to work in a printing lab. It's why I got into photography, having a studio at my disposal let me practice whenever I needed to! I did however, during the six-year stint at the shop, gain an appreciation and love for the printed media.
Sourcing a wedding album isn't like Googling a book maker and sending your pictures! The albums are made of insanely high-quality paper, durable finishes and sturdy pages. They're meant to last decades and even centuries without fading! I spent literal years trialling all sorts of top-notch companies to find my bookmaker, and in 2022 I found the perfect one. I've been using them ever since, and encourage you just to think about how you want your pictures to be stored. Digital media is great, versatile and easy to consume, but may not be around for ever. Books however can sit on a shelf and be passed to the next generation to treasure. I still have my parents and grandparents' wedding albums!

I can never, ever get over how fun this couple were!In the baking hot, 30c summer of 2023, this outdoor wedding surpassed all others in terms of fun, creativity and happiness. Sure, I may have burnt out my streaming equipment post-wedding and had to replace it, but it was worth it to capture such an eventful day.

With video and photos, the couple had everything captured. A live stream was sent back to the families abroad to watch as the ceremony unfolded, and the video captured was beautiful from start to finish. I couldn't ask for anything more (except maybe a little less hot on the day please)

3 WEDDING TIPS! 🫡If there's one thing I excel in, it's knowing a lot of obscure, highly niche pieces of advice relating to wedding days. Let's roll-off 3 from the top of my head right for you now!

1: The sun isn't always your friend! On bright, midday sun summer weddings I'll often either take group photos in the shade or with the sun behind the groups. Modern cameras are so sensitive to light that shooting "the shadow side" is perfectly useable and avoids squinting guests as they get blasted by the sun.

2: Big hats at receptions. I know it's tradition for guests to wear fanciers and large wedding hats, even my mum had one at my wedding. Whilst great, they can obscure shots quite quickly during the speeches and reception on the day. My tip is to NOT have someone sitting directly in front of you on the wedding tables - that way there are no hats to block the perfect shots!

3: Don't worry about where I am! Part of the job of a photographer is to capture the moments of the wedding day, be it formally or candidly. I have a range of equipment that can allow me to photograph groups and people from 10-20m away, like the lens in the image. Whilst we actively avoid "shooting backs" (groups tend to have half the group facing away from the camera so the backs are all we see), these telephoto lenses let us shoot over your shoulder and straight at your other guests. This adaptability is what you pay for in a photographer!

Stick around for more advice and ideas! Jon

Still one of my favourite weddings, I'll never stop reposting it!At The Glasshouse in Leamington Spa, you can get married in a botanical greenhouse. The humidity is NOT friends with cameras with large glass elements, but once they had acclimatised to the heat, we were good to go! The couple had a fusion wedding, a little bit of traditional and a little bit modern. Everyone was so nice, the weather was just warm and summery (take note January), and each photo was just banger after banger. I especially liked the dancing in the evening!
