Elders Awards 2024
Last weekend saw the return of Vision2Reality’s Elders Awards. This was the 8th Elders Awards, where we gave special recognition and thanks to Elders over the age of retirement who selflessly help others in the community and in doing so has made significant differences to the lives of others.
At a time when these Elders can choose to put their feet up and take it easy, they continue to contribute to society (despite their own ailments and limitations); helping to make a difference to the lives of others in the community and inspiring others; expecting no payment or recognition for what they do. The fact they are not expecting any reward for what they’re doing, is the reason why we publicly acknowledge them and say Thank You.
The night began with a heartfelt address from the Mayor of Sandwell, Cllr Syeda Khatun, who reminded us why we were all there: “To celebrate and acknowledge our elders,”
She said, “to be in awe of their tenacity and kindness.” These elders have faced their own hardships but have continued to serve tirelessly, making life better for the next generation.
We were also honoured to hear from Award winning Miss P (Laurel Cameron Robinson), a poet and actor who has recited in the House of Lords. She described our elders as “the pioneers of our society, the Windrush generation, setting examples for others to follow.”
The evening was full of nostalgia and unity. With the elders singing along with Miss P a song from their childhood. “Long time gal me never see you…” a moment that had everyone smiling and singing along.
We were also entertained by Jannette Barrett aka Empress Lyricists “B”, an Actor, Playwriter, Singer, Poet and Author who performed extracts from her play. Delareece brought us some gospel reggae which had everyone rocking to the beat, we also had poetry from Joan Mardner and an uplifting empowerment address by Lloyd Blake an elder in the community who had written his autobiography and encouraged elders in the room to do the same.
The Award Ceremony itself was memorable and emotional for some of the winners The room was filled with pride as we acknowledge the strength, resilience, and legacy from the nominees.
There were five generations gathered in the room, each witnessing and honouring this legacy together.
Saluting our Elders: Our community is better because of their contributions.
