I got nominated in this challenge, so I am posting 15 albums that heavily influenced me.

Album 4 of 15:
'[Self-Titled]' by

On the same day my friend Paul M played me 's Garage Inc., he also put this on, and I’d never heard anything like it before. If Garage Inc. was my gentle introduction to metal, Slipknot was a full-on explosion.

It was chaotic. It was aggressive. It was a racket—but in the best possible way. He was growling and full-on SCREAMING some of the lyrics! I didn't know they could do that! It blew my mind, and I immediately wanted more. This album was a huge turning point for me, not just in terms of discovering heavier music, but also realising how raw and emotional metal could be.

Even now, that first listen still sticks with me.

Standout Track for Me: 'Surfacing'

I got nominated in this challenge, so I am posting 15 albums that heavily influenced me.

Album 3 of 15:
Garage Inc. by

I first heard this album when I was about 14 at my friend Jon's house when he played me some albums he'd got. Before then, I had a completely different idea of what metal sound would sound like, especially Metallica—I thought it was something scary and unapproachable. But then Garage Inc. happened.

I didn’t realise at the time that it was all covers—I just knew I loved what I was hearing. It was intricate, powerful, and had this raw energy that completely drew me in. 'Mercyful Fate' and 'Sabbra Cadabra' just sounded wonderful and overwrought and dramatic in the best possible way. Even after I found out it was a cover album, my love for it didn’t change. It was my gateway into Metallica, and more than that, into metal as a whole.

Without this album, I might never have discovered how much I love heavy music.

Also, without this album, I might never have learnt that certain vulgarities COULD be used in a song! (I'm looking at you, 'So What?', and you Anti Nowhere League ... You, you you!!!)

Standout Track for Me: 'Mercyful Fate'

I got nominated in this challenge, so I am posting 15 albums that heavily influenced me.

Album 2 of 15:
'Dookie' by Day

The first album I ever bought for myself—though not from a shop. I got it from a school friend who was bored with it and needed a couple of quid for bus fare. I had absolutely no idea what Green Day sounded like but was up for giving them a go. His loss, my gain.

To me, this album is the quintessential Green Day sound. It’s raw, punchy, and packed with energy, and it absolutely shaped my love for pop-punk. I was not yet into enough music to have heard anything quite like it. It sounded naughty and rebellious! The fast-paced drumming, the bratty nasal vocals, the catchy-but-grungy riffs—I didn't know albums could sound like that and it was everything I wanted from music at that point in my life. Even the album artwork and the liner notes and photos grabbed me! I didn't know albums could LOOK like that - so irreverent and scruffy and chaotic!

It’s still one of the best pop-punk albums, in my opinion, with no duff tracks. A complete classic that holds up over 30 years (ouch!) later. I got far more into Offspring later - but Green Day's Dookie paved the way (chortle!).

Standout Track for Me: 'Chump'

I got nominated in this challenge so I am posting 15 albums that heavily influenced me.

Album 1 of 15:
Supposed Former Infatuation Ju**ie by Alanis Morissette

Besides compilation albums like the NOW albums, this was the first album I ever owned myself. I asked my parents for it one Christmas when I was about 13 or 14—mainly because the girl I liked at the time was into Alanis Morissette. I had absolutely no idea what sort of music she made. But, luckily it turned out to be an album that stuck with me far beyond that crush. As a first album to listen to by a singer-songwriter, I think this was a good introduction.

I still absolutely love it today, and it's my favourite Alanis album—not 'Jagged Little Pill' like most people seem to expect. The depth, the storytelling, and the rawness, intensity, and moodiness of the lyrics just really got to me and I listened to this album sooooo many times!

Standout Track for Me: 'The Couch'.

Who else will join me in this challenge?
