I've had such a lovely time this evening painting for a little girl's birthday party, although I probably spent a little more time chatting away than I did painting faces at times! Such a friendly, welcoming family.

Most of the time I was kept company by this lovely lady, Kaneez, and with her permission I asked if I could share a little bit about her.

I always taught my children not to stare at things that might be a little bit different from what you're used to, and to ask questions rather than whisper behind people's backs. So I got talking to her about her sight, if she'd ever been able to see and about how she experienced colour and experiences like face painting which rely a lot on vision. She didn't mind me asking questions, like most people she prefers that rather than rudeness and staring.

She explained to me how she did have some vision when she was younger so she does have colour memory and can imagine the colours of her face painting now and found the experience of being painted soothing. She also mentioned how many blind people associate colour with certain emotions or words. I learned how she had an accident as a child and lost her sight completely around age 8. We talked a lot about her life, how she manages daily life, and it was sad to hear that she still often experiences people staring (and yes, she might not be able to see, but she still feels those eyes drilling into her!).

Kaneez has learned that she can do things, lack of sight doesn't stop her. She applies her own makeup (flawlessly!), she will give things a go and find a way to do things that works for her. She might not always be confident doing it, but she doesn't let anything stop her.

I asked if she minded if I took a photo and shared with others - mostly because I wanted to show people the kind hearted soul behind this face and that it is far better to politely ask questions than subject her to stares and ridicule. She agreed because she is all in favour of advocacy and she felt comfortable enough with me to allow me to do so.

In the short time I spent talking to her and her family I learned a lot about her, and she is the most wonderful person to talk to - I could quite happily sit and chat with her for hours (I very nearly did!!). She has a great sense of humour, and is quite happy to laugh at herself too. There was even a little joke about the blind leading the blind when she was talking about how her sister in an Elsa mascot costume was asking her to help navigate her surroundings!

Remember there is a person behind every illness and disability. If your children are curious, encourage them to ask questions - the worst that happens is the person says no, they don't want to talk about it, but that's much nicer than stares and whispering.

I sincerely hope I get the pleasure of her and her family's company again one day...
