Bodmin Folk Club

Bodmin Folk Club The home of traditional folk song in Cornwall. Established 1968. They decided to start a club to raise funds for British folksingers to visit Cornwall.

In the Late 1960s a tide of contemporary American folk music was sweeping Britain and several clubs in Cornwall featured this material. However, in 1967 a small group of traditional singers, including Vic Legg and Lar Cann started meeting for weekly sessions in the Masons' Arms, Bodmin. The first recorded club night of the Bodmin Traditional Folk Club, as it was then, was on 31st May 1968 in an upper room at The Barley Sheaf.

Remember we had our annual charity night a few weeks ago ? Well ... an amazing £710 was raised and this week members of the club took the cheque and presented it.

Lin Shevill was one of the members who went down and she wrote this for us ..

Members Visit Women’s Refuge Centre
On Wednesday 19 th November members of the club paid a visit to the Women’s Refuge Centre, our chosen charity of the year. Viv Legg, Jenny Martin, Barbara Cashem and LinShevill were warmly welcomed and hosted by one of the charity’s fund raising team,
Hannah. The purpose of the visit was to acknowledge the transfer of the £710 the club raised for the centre on the club’s charity night.
The members were shown around the centre, and shown some of the work the charity carries out during which, they met permanent staff and volunteers alike. The centre provides assistance to women in need all over Cornwall and even further afield. A worthwhile charity deserving of our support.

Well that was an impressive evening. David Fenner brought Simon Diegan along to accompany him on melodron and vocals, and that was an added bonus! Lovely songs written by contemporary composers, friends ranging, as well as superb songs crafted by David, from lyrical to poignant, from songs about Cornwall's railway stations to love songs. Great harmonies.

What a great night at Bodmin Folk Club! Ghoulies, ghosties and things that go bump in the night .. everything from personal stories of seeing ghosts through songs about death and ghosts to the whole Ballad of Tam Lin, something rarely heard as it is very long, and a short version of the Great Silkie of Sule Skerry but BFC is a club that will embrace and listen to the Big Ballads. Great evenng with great people .. great club

Bodmin Folk Club yesterday shared a great evening with Dreamers Folk Club at Four Lanes. Huge thanks to all at Dreamers, for their warm and friendly welcome, generous hospitality and varied and talented performances. 15 of us braved the wild weather, and Bodmin FC performers did the club proud, ably encouraged by our wonderful MC Ian Shevill.
Apologies for the quality of photos, which do not reflect the high standard of the evening.
Poor Doug was reduced to a blank image but his singing was excellent and I sneaked a photo as we were leaving.

Tremendous evening with Barbara and Peter Snape. It shows the calibre of your guests when members of the audience travel over 50 miles just to see them ! If they are playing anywhere near you go and see them, you won't be disappointed.
