This certainly isn’t something you see every day! 🤯We noticed one of the stick insects starting to moult, and managed to get the tripod set up in time for a time-lapse ⏰The whole process took around 20 minutes, but it’ll be another hour or so until the new exoskeleton dries off and hardens properly. How cool is this? 😁

🌟 January Highlights 🌟

It’s finally the end of January! 🥳
We’ve had birthday parties, home visits, care homes, schools, and even photoshoots with our team so far this year, making January one of the busiest months we’ve ever had.
We’re going to *try* and post highlights at the end of each month this year, so if you have an encounter booked with us be sure to send us your best snaps, and they might make their way onto the page! 📸

Some delicious grapes for Elvis and Levi’s snacks today 🍇
Levi enjoys holding it in his foot as he peels the outer skin away. Elvis unfortunately doesn’t have the luxury of a spare foot, so instead uses his platform to hold it in place while he tucks in 🦜

We had a trip over to Ossett today, and came away with some new additions 🍂
These little guys are leaf insects, and only the size of a finger nail so it will be a while until they join us out and about 🍃
If anybody is in the Ossett area, I’d definitely recommend a trip to Primitive Pets! They had a fantastic array of unusual reptiles (and inverts) in very well kept and decorated enclosures. It’s one of those stores you can just tell that the welfare of the animals comes above everything else🦎🐍

Let’s introduce Chewie 🐍

Chewie is a 7 year old royal python that was recently given to us as her previous owners realised they couldn’t spend daily time with her anymore.

It’ll be a few weeks until she’s on the encounters team as we make sure she’s happy and comfortable with her new surroundings 😊

We love watching Cinder ‘hunt’ her dinner! Chasing crickets around is a great way to keep her mobile and active. This one made a lucky escape (for now) 🦗

We’ve got some new isopods (although you might have to zoom in to see them!)

These little guys are known as ‘White Sharks’ 🦈

There’s only 15 of them for now, but we’re hopeful that in a few weeks we’ll have another established breeding colony like our Panda Kings and Jelly Beans 🫘🐼

🌟 Appreciation post! 🌟

There’s one member of our team that doesn’t get a lot of recognition, despite being with us for several years.
Arguably the hardest worker of us all, he never complains about the work no matter how much we ask of him. He’s in with the parrots and rats every day clearing their mess, whether that’s spilled food, p**p, or rogue feathers during the moult. We’ve even had him get inside the enclosures to clean the difficult to reach places!
He’s always got a smile on his face, despite the way we treat him and the profanities that might go his way. He did once throw himself down the stairs, but we worked through that one together. The only time we hear him grumble is when he needs us to change his nappy.

So here’s to you, Henry! We’re grateful for all of your hard work, and here’s to many more years together 🥳

Those of you that have met Echo will no doubt have heard us mention how you can see in one ear and out the other. The angle and lighting was just right for me to snap this photo to prove it! 🦎

An important part of keeping animals that eat insects is making sure that the ‘feeders’ are also fed. This means that they live longer (less wastage for us) and they have better nutritional value when our animals eat them. Here are some locusts tucking into their cabbage 🥬

We’re so glad to see the back of this snow! 🐇

We’d like to say a massive thank you to today’s customers for being so understanding about us having to delay their encounters from last Sunday due to the weather ⛄️

Hopefully we’re back to normal for next week’s encounters 😄
