Last week, our cohort of Young Creatives took a trip to to catch 'In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats'. It's an incredible VR experience by Darren Emerson.✨️

Set in 1989, audience members wear VR headsets to be transported back in time to the end of a turbulent decade in the UK. The experience brings to life the stories of the promoters, police officers, and rave goers, whose rivalry and relationships drove a revolution in music and society.

There was an exhibition that accompanied the VR experience. It explored rave culture in the 80's and 90's and featured a celebration of local histories.

Thanks to for the opportunity. Our LYC cohort had such a brilliant time 🫶🏽✨️ Scroll right for photos 📸 👉🏽

Back in August we kicked off Brighton Pride weekend with a special screening of the Iris Prize-nominated short film Ted & Noel (2023) at the Lighthouse Project Space, in partnership with FilmPride 🌈 This was followed by a Q&A with Director Julia Alcamo and Ted Brown, the documentary's subject, hosted by Fez from our Future Creative Leaders and Deborah Espect of Film Pride.

The documentary highlights Ted Brown, a legendary 72-year-old LGBTQ+ and civil rights activist who was pivotal in organising the UK's first Pride march in 1972. While celebrating London Pride’s 50th anniversary, Ted grieves the loss of his partner Noel, who faced severe homophobic abuse in his final days.

The Q&A delved into Ted’s experiences and explored practical ways to support ageing q***r individuals in the UK. ❤️

In a heartening twist, local historian Alf Le Flohic, who was present at the event, arranged for Ted to be at the front of the 2024 Brighton pride parade, a touching tribute to his lifelong activism.

We recently hosted a career story lunch with the Lighthouse team, LYC mentors Sarah Brownlow Photography, Abraham Moughrabi, Maf'j Alvarez and Callum Andrew Johnston, our LYC alumni, and our new cohort of Lighthouse Young Creatives. Everyone shared their career journeys and gave some valuable advice about navigating the creative industry.

We realised that many of us had taken non-linear paths to get where we are today. We all shared and are driven by a deep passion for the arts and making the arts accessible to all, and it was this common narrative that led us to explore different roles and approaches throughout our careers.

For Lighthouse, career story lunches are incredibly important as they give emerging creatives a chance to learn directly from those who are already working in the field they aspire to work in. By hearing real-life experiences, challenges, and insights from professionals, young creatives gain a more realistic view of their career path and the resilience it requires.

Here are some snippets of advice that was shared at the lunch. Scroll right 👉🏽👉🏽

This week we’re reading the latest Dis_Contented Substack by Elsa Monteith who is one of our current Future Creative Leaders and also a Lighthouse Young Creative alumni. It's a project that’s funded by the Arts Council’s Developing Your Creative Practice fund which we supported Elsa on.

This month’s edition is titled 008: AlgaeRhythm. It’s a guest post by the author of AVM (AKA Animal Vegetable Mineral), an anthology that’s available to pre-order now. Check the link in the Substack 👉🏽 Scroll right for quotes direct from the feature.

Elsa describes Dis_Contented, as ‘a living archive exploring the future of writing beyond the algorithm. A literary lucky dip of reflection, interview, book review, guest post, or something similarly writing-adjacent exploring the anti-algorithm.’

“I’m curious about what might happen if we write and create without the pull of profit or draw of the algorithm. I want to write just because it’s good, or it’s interesting, or at the very least, it’s something I can mindlessly scroll through instead of browsing *that* bird app.”

💥We are a month into the 2024-25 Lighthouse Young Creatives programme. Our cohort of 17 young creatives got to know each other in their introduction sessions by badge making, building paper birds, and through a series of ice-breakers!

Over the next few weeks, they’ll begin creative and business masterclasses with industry experts. The masterclasses will dive into key creative skills, such as storytelling, sound and field recording, visual art, performance, budgeting, branding and confidence building. The sessions will allow each participant to deepen their understanding and practice in a hands-on way.

The cohort will have the chance to start a personal or group project, applying the new skills they’ve learned. This will be a space for them to explore their unique ideas with support from mentors Sarah Brownlow Photography, Abraham Moughrabi, Maf'j Alvarez and Callum Andrew Johnston, who’ll provide feedback and guidance, helping them navigate challenges and refine their creative approaches. Ideas have already started flowing and the group’s projects will be showcased at an exhibition in March 2025. So watch this space… 🌱

Over the weekend, we welcomed many of you to the Lighthouse Project Space to experience Lost Memories, a video installation for this year’s Dreamy Place. Created by filmmaker and screenwriter Gary Thomas, the installation explores the emotional journey of caring for a loved one with dementia.

Gary interviewed a range of disabled artists and other creatives when curating Lost Memories, learning about their practice and exploring his own unique style of working.

The installation shares his deeply personal journey of caring for his mother, who had Alzheimer’s. It highlights the hidden struggles and rare joys of caregiving, offering recognition to countless carers who support loved ones with dementia.

Many of you praised the film's beauty and its relatable portrayal of contemporary life in the UK, highlighting a system in need of reform.

Lost Memories was presented by Lighthouse and Figment Arts as part of Dreamy Place with support from Arts Council England. 💜 Videoclub
