This is an exclusive season here at TOM, where we take live events and turn them 360 degrees.

Previously known as 'Immersive', and after a hugely successful launch last year, we're stoked to announce the first two artists for our 2024 programme.

The amazing Ah! Kosmos, Başak Günak will be here on Thu 21 November. A sound artist and composer, Günak pursues her sound experimentations by composing soundscapes for theatre, contemporary dance, film and visual art projects, and realising site-specific performances. Her work has been featured worldwide for venues including the Barbican and Royal Theater Carré, as well as festivals including Sonar Festival in Spain, Berlin CTM Festival and Tokyo Electronic Music of Arts Festival in Japan.

Electronic producer and artist Forest Swords then comes to TOM on Fri 22 November. He is known for rewiring sounds into innovative electronic worlds, with remixes for the likes of Björk and Neneh Cherry. He has simultaneously explored scoring and composition for many visual and art projects, including an original score for the Sundance award-winning documentary Ghosts of Sugar Land, and he has recently created the score and sound design for the Greek tragedy 'Fedra' at Teatro Greco in Syracuse, Sicily.

*Did you know that it's been nearly a whole year since we stopped paying for advertising on social media?*

In July 2023, we realised we had been spending too much on it and became dependent. It became a 'go-to' for our TOM-tagged events.

So we stopped and went cold turkey.

We took the budget we'd previously used for social media adverts for individual events and invested in our artists and our city...

- We commissioned the awesome to write poems for us and paid our Reigning Women artists and a local production crew to shoot the Reigning Women seasonal trailer

- We booked local photographers to take pictures of the awesome events and artists in action at TOM, with brilliant photos and footage coming from and amongst others

- We worked with our friends and Charlton from Mikado to spread the word about the amazing artists in our season, putting up billboards all over town and huge posters on the seafront, purely to put the spotlight on the talent we have in our city

- We took out more adverts in local media outlets, including our friends .ingenue and more

We did all this. And were sales affected?

NOPE.

In fact, our 2024 season was our most successful to date.

So today, we want to say three things...

1) Thank you to our amazing artists, photographers, media partners and suppliers - it is a joy to not only work with you but to call you our friends. We hope to continue to work together for years to come!

2) We're not saying, 'Don't ever run a social media advert ever again'. But don't throw money into the void that is social media just because it's what is expected of you.

3) We love our community, we love you reading this. Thank you.

How can we push the boundaries of live performance, and make our events more immersive? 💡 To answer this question, we created a new immersive experience using 360 visuals and spatial sound, and over four days we presented events including: HALINA RICE: NEW WORLDS IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE - Electronic music producer Halina Rice presented her unique vision to this new experience, translating elements of her show in a way that had never been seen before, and ran a masterclass showing how to create an event like this 🙌 LIGHTFORM LAB - As part of our HERA Partnership social prescribing project to help develop artists making work focussed on wellbeing, our Lab participants came together to test out ideas for immersive sensory environments ✨ FEVER CLUB: SALON OF SOUL - Boogie through wonderland. Infectious beats and mind-bending visuals in a party that was 'curious and curiouser' 🕺 These events took place as part of our #TOMtech programme, bridging the gap between traditional performance and new technology. More events like these will be coming in future - watch this space...
