Back at The Bakewell Mem tomorrow as long as the pitches aren’t frozen. The 1st XV will take on in what is always a physical battle at 2:30, pending a pitch inspection in the morning. The 2s original fixture with Sodbury is being rearranged so they make the short trip to unbeaten in a friendly fixture. Come on up and cheer the boys on!

It’s an early kick off (2pm) so lads can watch the quarter finals. A welcome back into the mix for Josh Skinner and a 1st XV debut off the bench for exciting young prospect Leon Atherton who recently represented the Midlands at rugby league. Go well boys!

We are looking to add to our coaching department and are seeking an attack/backs coach.

There is no set criteria for the role but a track record is welcomed. The club boasts a mix of experience and youth in the backline, all of whom are keen to improve.

🌯 BAR SNACK CLUB! 🌯 Disappointing result last weekend but we’ve bounced back Thursday with Muzzy’s last BSC as a single man. Chilli beef enchiladas with all the trimmings, absolutely superb. Melvin couldn’t make it but we’ve received evidence of him stuffing his face with a Double Quarter Pounder. Good luck to Muzzy marrying in Cyprus next week and good luck to both sides on Saturday. As well as an absolutely thriving junior section, has worked hard to wheel the old boys out as often as possible for the Andrew Bridgman Vets side. Yesterday they entered the Vets 10s tournament and Maggsy tells me they lost 24-22 to Old Reds in the cup semi final before beating a youthful Broad Plain 27-24 to win the plate. I don’t know how much (if any) of this is true, but they had a great day! Thanks to everyone who donned the shirt yesterday, especially the bloke who came up from after we visited them on tour!

Loads going on in the coming weeks and months, starting with our AGM last night.

Congratulations to all officers elected, especially Joe Buller taking on the vice captaincy and Maggsy and Muzzy joining the committee. Next season will be my 13th and final season as 1st XV captain so I’m looking forward to making it one to remember at the Bakewell Mem.

Dates for your diary include:

📆 June 29th - players’ meeting/BBQ, 8pm at the club (touch beforehand from 7pm)
📆 July 4th - pre-season training starts, 6:45pm
📆 July 15th - club work day from 10am. Bring tools, strimmers etc. BBQ on and bar open!
📆 August 11th - Southmead (H)
📆 August 19th - Barts (A) - two fixtures, 1sts and 2nds
📆 August 25th - Broad Plain (H)

It is with great sadness we inform you of the passing of Paul Roberts after a long battle with illness earlier this month.

We sadly say farewell on December 5th to Paul aka Burnsy, Faceache, Boobie and many more nicknames he picked up over his long career at Saracens.

Paul made his debut in 1896 and continued to play well into his 60s. A real character at the club, he trained barefoot every pre-season for donkey’s years.

Paul had been club chairman, a life member and ever present on every work party for decades. You always knew when he was in the bar, full of fun and high jinks and we will all miss the wet finger in the ear or the passing ni**le wrench! As former club captain Dave Healy said, "He was a pest but he was our pest."

Paul made a massive contribution to Saracens both on and off the pitch for many years, and we all hope he is looking down on us enjoying a pint and a curry!

RIP Burnsy 💚

I can confirm the following details of Paul’s funeral:

Celebration of the life of Paul Roberts, 10.30am on Monday 5th December at Canford Crematorium, Canford Lane, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol BS9 3PQ.

Afterwards at Bristol Saracens Rugby Football Club, Bakewell Memorial Ground, BS10 7TT.

In lieu of flowers, donations are invited for St Peter’s Hospice, Bristol or MacMillan Cancer Support, Bristol.

With our quota of boards facing the road now full, the club committee are happy to announce that we are seeking sponsors for advertising boards on our 1st XV pitch, to be hung on the far side railings, facing in to the club house.

Combined, we have around 35 - 40 senior and vets home games each year, plus a packed junior schedule on a Sunday, so we expect plenty of eyes across the South West to see your signs.

We have an initial offering of 11 railings at a total cost of £500 for the first year, with retention discount offered for subsequent seasons. First come, first served basis.
