💐Happy National Florist day to all the amazing florists, growers, suppliers & wholesalers 💐

Things that I have learnt as a florist.

1) How many stems of flower & types we need to cover our orders as well as those special orders like specific tributes
2) That the main 3 peaks (Christmas, Valentine’s & Mother’s Day) is more 3-4 weeks rather than a day mainly due to preparations.
3) That a florist fork is a handy tool to remove tea bags if I can’t find a spoon.
4) How to remove lily pollen from clothing.
5) How many pairs of fingerless gloves are needed per day to keep hands & fingers warm & dry.
6) How many layers of clothing is need to keep warm during the winter
7) How to get tight closed lily heads to open
8) To maximise space to fit as many deliveries as possible in our vehicle.
9) To find addresses off the beaten track with no land marks nearby.
10) To always have a good supply of plasters & hand cream

Some tips & pointers that I have learnt in my many years of floristry

1) If you get lily pollen on your clothes, do not rub the stain, cover the stain with sellotape & pull off, repeat until pollen is removed.
2) Cut flower stems on an angle with a point to allow the stems to drink water better.
3) To stop tulips from flopping in a vase, put a 2p coin or any copper coin in the vase of water to keep them straight

The tools of the trade I use to allow me to be the magician to create my designs (from top to bottom)

1) floral shears, these are my favourite, made from stainless Japanese steel they are sharp enough to cut thick stems.

2) Oasis florist scissors, similar to the floral shears for cutting stems, I don’t find them as sharp as the shears to cut thick stems but they are brilliant at cutting paper & cellophane

3) Oasis florist knife, perfect for cutting some stems the old school way, it’s brilliant for removing rose thorns &
foliage off stems & for cutting Oasis foam.

4) Oasis stem stripper, a handy tool to remove thorns & excess foliage from stems, quicker than using a knife.

Mine is gerberas that are all year round & available in a range of colours, I also love Tulips, also available in a wide range of colours but are limited to January-April

This Saturday 8th June is the first. ‘National Florist Day’ so what is National Florist Day & what does it do?

Basically it is a day to appreciate the whole of the floristry industry, not just florists but also the growers, wholesalers & suppliers who allow us as florists to choose a wide range of products to create a very wide range of designs, from bouquets for any occasion to bespoke funeral tributes to express your love.

Supermarkets & other players may sell flowers but they can not take away the uniqueness of skilled florists, we are all different special magicians & as an industry in floristry we went to raise awareness of our trade & to celebrate our skills.
