Dylan: Firstly, I’d like to thank you all for your support this year and many of you for all the seasons we’ve had with the Apico Husqvarna Team. Competing at the top level of British Motocross isn’t easy, your help is appreciated. However, the time has come to close the doors on the Apico Husqvarna workshop.

The efforts to run the team from Anna and I are significant, from the hours I spend maintaining the race bikes, to race days through to this very press release you are reading right now. I would like to think we’re one of the teams in the British paddock that present your products well. Not only at the racing but through all our marketing channels too.

This year has had more lows than highs with Jack Lindsay, our MX2 rider badly breaking his leg at the very first round of the championship. This left us as a one-rider team for all competitions. Martin also picked up injuries after a crash at Blaxhall, which resulted in missing a round of the MX Nationals & British Motocross Championship.

Martin Barr finished a respectable 6th in the MX1 Class at the Michelin MX Nationals and 14th in the British Championship. These results somewhat reflect the tough season Martin has endured, but that’s racing. We still managed to fit in the Apico 2 Stroke Festival, VMXdN Foxhills and the Arenacross Tour and still have the British GP and MXoN to compete in, where Martin has been the number one choice for Team Ireland once again.

Over the past nine years we have had a lot of success, Steven Clarke EMX250 Champion, 2nd Overall British Championship. Bry McKenzie 3rd Overall British Championship, Jamie Law 4th Overall British Championship, Stu Edmonds British Open 2 Stroke Champion, Multiple top ten championship finishes and a straight 5th,6th 7th Weston Beach Race for Law, Burrows & Edmonds and not forgetting multiple MXoN for Ireland.

Anna and I would like to personally thank the following for their contributions to the team over the past nine years, Richard Clarke, Sean Burrows, Steven Clarke, Bry McKenzie, Zander Brown, Kristian Whatley, Matt Burrows, Jack Lindsay, Stu Edmonds, Jamie Law, Martin Barr & Zac Stealey for all their efforts on track. Scott Cannon, Josh Owen, Mark Southwick for all the bits in between, Stuart Summers, Brian Connolly, James Martin, Allistar Holland, Dave Russell & Ian Marshall for their time on the spanners, Karen & Mike Law for providing the team food and entertainment and all the rider families.

It's not the end for the team, but we will have a different look, with new colours and the same passion and desire.

We look forward to 2024 and the new changes, but now it's time to say thanks again for your support and farewell to Apico Husqvarna.

Anna and I hope you can be a part of what’s to come, we’ll see you all again in the new season.

It was the first trip for Apico Husqvarna to the newly developed Monster Mountain track for the last round of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. The area was vast and impressive, a permanent reminder of the de-industrialised region and how the offroad industry has created business opportunities and supports amenities in the area.

The team arrived and set up on Saturday, somewhat of a low-key arrangement due to the possible wind and bad weather that threatened the region over the weekend. Martin Barr was competing and Jack Lindsay #433 made the trip to support the team with his family.

Martin was impressed with the track and effort put into developing the venue. Qualifying wasn’t as important to Martin as it usually is, due to the number of riders that hadn’t attended the final round. Even finishing 10th, he had his pick of the gates.

In race 1 Martin selected an inside gate, which worked well. He came out of the first corner inside the top 5 riders and settled into 6th place comfortably in the first couple of laps. Martin was approaching the finish on lap 3 when he was completely wiped out by another rider and dragged along by his back wheel injuring his leg. This incident caused damage to Martin's bike too. The breather pipe was ripped out covering him in fuel and damaged his clutch. This left Martin in 12th position by the time he re-mounted to continue the race. The weather didn't help the situation, a massive downpour of rain mid-race added at least 10 seconds to even the quickest riders' lap times. Martin rode out the race in 12th position.

After a disappointing first race, Martin headed out into Race 2 wanting to put his stamp on the championship and finish on a high. He opted for the outside line around the first turn this time, not getting the jump he required meant he was pushing through the pack until disaster struck at the mid-point of the first lap. A huge stone hit Martin in the face, taking his helmet peak off and damaging his goggles. After a few laps, he came into the pits for replacement goggles. After having to ride in the opposite direction to rejoin the track dead last, Martin completed a couple of laps before conceding and abandoning the race.

Martin: “This wasn’t how the British Championship Season was meant to end. I’m bitterly disappointed with the circumstances that led to a poor weekend for me. The DNF in the last race was hard to take, though kind of sums up the season starting and finishing the Revo British Motocross Championship with DNFs. This has no reflection on the team, both were unforeseen circumstances. The no-score in the final race of the season left me 14th overall in the British Championship. My focus is now competing in the British GP in the lead-up to the MXoN where I’ll be riding for Team Ireland.

I’d like to thank Dylan & Anna and the team at Apico Husqvarna as well as my family and all my personal sponsors for their help and support for the 2023 season”.

Dylan: “An unfortunate last round kind of sums up our luck in the Revo British Championship for 2023. The first race incident that caused Martin to crash shouldn’t have happened, though some may say that’s part of racing. Race 2 was just very unfortunate; I know Martin tried his best and that’s all I can ask. Finishing 14th in the MX1 British Championship isn’t a reflection of everyone’s efforts, sometimes luck isn’t on your side and that seems to have been the story this season.

I’d like to thank the sponsors, we cannot go racing without your support, something that is very important to all race teams in the paddock. Thank you for the ongoing support you’ve provided the team this season and long may this continue. We now look to the British GP and to finish the season at the Motocross of Nations with Martin and Team Ireland”.

The final round of the Michelin MX Nationals UK took place at the iconic Hawkstone Park in the Midlands. It would be another solo appearance for the team with Martin Barr at his favoured track. The weather had also shown up for the event, something we’ve not had much of this season. The team were all set up on Saturday in readiness for Sunday’s racing.

The qualifying format had reverted to the MX2 then MX1 gate pick for the mixed class. Martin’s starts have suffered since returning from injury, so it was imperative he managed to get a good qualifying lap and gate pick. It was on the first lap that Martin managed to find the space and get a hot lap in, this was a stroke of luck as his rear shock blew out on the first lap. This was still good enough for 4th fastest in the Leatt Protectives MX1 Pro qualifying and set the tone for a good day.

In race 1 Martin, wearing the latest Leatt Sundown kit from the 2024 collection, didn’t get the jump out of the gate he’d wanted. Regardless, he went with the intensity of the race making early passes in the first couple of corners to 8th. He held the position for a lap before making a mistake in the hairpin bend coming out of the forest and going down losing a few positions to MX2 riders. This upset Martin’s rhythm for a few laps before he settled into the race. In the last half of the race, we saw the Martin Barr we were used to. His intensity and flow were back, and he began to make ground on the riders in front of him. Martin caught and easily passed the second place MX2 rider in the old bomb hole area of the track, crossing the line 7th in the MX1 Class.

Race 2 was the final race for the Michelin MX Nationals in the format as we know it. Martin had been trying some new techniques with his starts to try and improve them since his incident earlier in the season at Blaxhall. It was at this race that he made his best start of the season up inside the top 4 riders. For the first lap, Martin looked comfortable despite the pressing pack of riders hot on his heels. It was lap 2 where a loss of focus for a second caused him to go down pretty hard crashing and losing his helmet peak.

Undeterred, Martin was back finding his groove before another small tip-off cost him several places. He lost his flow for a couple of laps and had just started pushing on and trading places with an MX2 rider, rounding out the last few laps without any challenges, finishing 8th at the flag and 7th overall in the Leatt Pro MX1 Class.

Dylan: It’s been a tough season, with only Martin representing the team due to Jack Lindsay #433 injury at the first round of the season at Oakhanger. Martin has had his fair share of bad luck with his crash at Blaxhall and a couple of bike issues. Taking all these things into account, we’ve still managed to finish 6th in the Leatt Pro MX1 Championship for the final season of the MX Nationals as we know it.

There’s still the final round of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship this weekend at Monster Mountain, a new track we’ve not visited yet as Martin was injured earlier in the season. With Martin lying in 13th position in the MX1 Championship there’s not a lot to gain, though we’ll go and do what we do to finish the season hopefully on a high.

Thanks to all the team sponsors, staff and helpers for their input this season, Anna and I couldn’t have done this without you. Once we have news on 2024 we’ll make an announcement, you’ll all be the first to know”.

09/08/2023

The penultimate round of the Michelin MX Nationals UK MX Nationals took place at Cusses Gorse, close to Salisbury Plain in Hampshire. This was to be the last Professional Motocross event to take place before the track closed its gates, sadly for the last time. The weather had not been kind, and after the International Quad & Sidecar event the week prior to this, the track looked tough and technical for Sunday’s racing.

Martin Barr was feeling much better from the injuries he’d sustained at Blaxhall and was ready to take the fight to the Leatt Protectives Pro MX1 Class. He went out into the qualifying session confident, though struggled with the conditions and couldn’t get a clear lap so had to settle for 9th place in the Leatt Pro MX1 Class.

In race 1, with the new format of having the MX1 riders line up on the outside of the gate box, and the Apico Factory-Racing Pro MX2 riders line up inside, Martin had no option but to pick the ninth gate. With the first corner being a hairpin bend at Cusses and not getting the jump, Martin tried to come in closer toward the apex of the corner but tagged another rider and crashed. He came over the first tabletop dead last, so had a lot of work to do. After pushing through a number of Apico Pro MX2 riders, he managed to catch and pass up to 11th at the flag.

After resolving a suspension issue from the first race, Martin was prepared to push on and aim for a better finish in race 2. After getting a start inside the top 10, Martin managed to get a few laps in before he noticed the same rear shock issue that had affected his first race. Knowing what the problem was and having a large enough gap on the next MX1 rider, Martin was able to control the bike around the course for the duration of the race, staying in front of his competitors and finishing 9th in the Leatt Pro MX1 Class race, for 8th overall.

Martin now lies 7th in the Michelin MX Nationals Leatt Pro MX1 Championship, after missing a round due to injury.

Dylan: “It’s been a funny season for many reasons, injuries, cancellations, and terrible weather. Regardless of this, we’ve all pushed to make the best of things and after a great start to this championship, Martin was unfortunate to have suffered a DNF at the first round of the REVO and the injuries sustained at Blaxhall. This weekend has shown a somewhat return to form for Martin. In his second race, although hampered by the rear shock issue, he dug deep and showed why we’d selected him for the team. The season has been cut short, which is a shame as we are just starting to see the old Martin, and although a top 5 finish in the Michelin MX Nationals is still possible, we’ll have to dig deep and do what we can to finish the season strong.

There’s a break now before the season resumes in September and we’re looking forward to the Vets Des Nations before this at the end of this month. They’ll be some familiar faces racing for the Apico Vets with Matt Burrows, Jamie Law and of course, Martin Barr competing. We’ll be running the Apico Hydration Station in conjunction with Ice Valley, raising funds for the Northwest Air Ambulance Charity as we have done for many years now. Anyone can come to the Apico stand and take bottles of water for a donation to the Air Ambulance. They’ll be a few ex-factory bikes on display related to Apico’s past. Be sure to visit the stand to see them and get your water from Apico & Ice Valley.

01/12/2022

As we approach 2023, it’s time to confirm our rider line-up for the upcoming year. The team will be streamlined, with Martin Barr in the MX1 category and Jack Lindsay in MX2.
This decision was not taken lightly and means the team can focus on both classes and put everything into achieving results for the team and our sponsors, whilst managing life outside of another hectic domestic schedule between the ACU-affiliated Revo British Motocross Championship fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels and Michelin MX Nationals.

Martin Barr “I’m very pleased to get a deal done with Apico Husqvarna for 2023. I know things could have been better in 2022, and I’ll be improving on this. I’m very happy with the bike, and the team and it made sense to stay where I feel comfortable. Last year everything came together at the last minute, this year I can focus on my training program and getting the new 2023 bike set up with plenty of time before the season starts. I’m really excited and looking forward to the start of the season. I need to go out and ride how I know I can ride. I believe that by being fully prepared I can improve on the 3rd place in the Michelin MX Nationals and 8th in the Revo British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels. I’d like to thank Dylan & Anna at Apico Husqvarna and their suppliers as well as my personal sponsors for their support going forward into 2023”.

Jack Lindsay “I’m really looking forward to the 2023 season, this will be my 8th year with the team. I’ll be staying on the 2 Stroke in the MX2 class and competing in the Pro Classes at the Michelin MX Nationals and Revo British Motocross Championship fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels. I made the transition to the pro ranks in 2022 and surpassed expectations scoring points at every round of the Revo British Championship I attended except Canada Heights and every round of the Michelin MX Nationals. I will be training hard over the winter period; I have a new program in place and it’s working well for me. I’m aiming to push hard and improve again, to repay Apico Husqvarna, their suppliers, and my personal sponsors. I’d like to thank Dylan and Anna for the opportunity to continue with the team in 2023”.

Dylan Brown “We have a plan in place for 2023 and will look to concentrate our efforts with Martin and Jack in the British Championships and select events for the season. The race calendar for the Michelin MX Nationals and Revo British Championship fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels provides challenges for me & Anna in running our business and a race team. We feel that a streamlined Apico Husqvarna team will help everyone equally in progressing and achieving better results in 2023. I’m looking forward to seeing Martin & Jack progress as we’re all putting the effort in to perform for our sponsors and ourselves and improve on our 2022 position”.
