Our Service Manager, Sharon, attended the Childrens Food Summit in Leeds recently. Breakouts and workshops explored future ideas for improving school food, advertising policies, use of taxes and how to achieve greater diversity and inclusion in campaigning on children's food. It was a great chance for attendees to have more focused discussions, share ideas and good practice and raise interesting questions.

Local TV presenter Peg Alexander joined young people in handing out the Children's Food 'Yummy' and 'Yucky' Awards. Winners included councils introducing local food advertising policies, a project linking school children with the farms their food comes from, the youth campaign Bite Back 2030 as well as some outstanding individuals. Following public voting, the Yucky villains included a breakfast cereal brand, an energy drink and a confectionery company.

It was a good day, bringing key industry voices together and raising key issues such as funding for school meals.

Participating school catering teams were provided with ten meal themes, recommended recipes, displays and stickers, designed to encourage uptake of school meals, promote healthier and more sustainable eating as well as promoting better eating habits for pupils.

Our catering team is experienced in providing a range of dietary, cultural and lifestyle requirements which are independently checked by a Public Health Nutritionist, to ensure all our menus are healthy and of a high quality. We also pride ourselves in sourcing ingredients of the highest quality, buying British and local food wherever possible, to support Bury’s local community, businesses and economy. We already incorporate organic produce and will widen our range to promote our journey towards “Food for Life” accreditation. Did you know Bury Council has declared a climate emergency? So as part of our service we are working to ensure increased recycling, the phasing out of single use plastics, as well as ensuring that our menus have increased plant based choices to reduce our carbon footprint.
