The Palace Hotel Buxton DOES THINGS THE JO COX WAY...🚲

~This picture shows the incredible turnout for the Buxton stretch of the Jo Cox way; the cyclists completed a huge 64.6 miles in 5 hours 45 minutes!

~The Jo Cox Way is a five-day, 280-mile bike ride in memory of Jo Cox MP, returning for another year to celebrate Jo’s life, her beliefs and all the good work that goes on in communities up and down the UK.

~With this part of the ride beginning at the Palace Hotel, Buxton, we just couldn't resist posting these wonderful images showing the cyclists before they set off.

A little more History about Buxton Spa Town with a lovely photograph from 1937

For 🤔 ... there was once a cinema along (84-86) Spring Gardens. In 1937, the Picture House (pictured here around 1926) was replaced by the art Deco style Spa Cinema with an extra 200 seats. 🪑🎦

The cinema competed with Buxton Opera House 🎭, which was also a cinema at the time. The Spa Cinema closed around 1963. The building continued as a cinema and bingo hall until it was eventually demolished around 1986.

Once a year the sun sets twice on the outskirts of Buxton...

Dragon's Back Ridge is home to a phenomena only found in a handful of places around the world, where once a year on the Summer Solstice, the sun appears to set twice...

It's likely our ancestors were aware of this; the surrounding landscape is scattered with mighty Neolithic stone circles that align with the sun on the first day of summer.

Unfortunately, in true Peak District style, it's completely overcast today. Perhaps next year! Regardless, happy summer from The Palace Hotel!

📖✏️⌚ The Palace Hotel is the last of the major Victorian spa hotels in Buxton. Unfortunately many of these architectural masterpieces have been lost over the years...

Pictured below is the Empire Hotel and Buxton Hydro; just a couple of the magnificent guesthouses constructed to capitalise on the boom in leisure during the 1800's...

The Empire had 300 rooms (briefly dethroning the Palace as the Peak Districts largest hotel!). Much like The Palace, these hotels were commandeered by the army during the war effort to provide hospital and office space. Sadly most either didn't reopen or closed in the post war years due to economic pressure.

But amidst the challenges, The Palace Hotel stood strong and adapted. It embarked on a new chapter, emerging as an internationally renowned conference centre during the 1950s; its grand presence continues to grace the skyline of Buxton as a testament to this golden era of Victorian leisure ✨

We had a great time at Vision Buxton: we're looking forward to an exciting year of events across the hotel and local town.

Thank you to the team at Poole's Cavern & Country Park for showing us the rich history of the cave (& the fastest growing stalagmites in the UK!). We can't recommend it enough if you're looking for an adventure this spring

With great weather to explore the gardens & search for garden critters as well as helping us plant some flowers 🪴🌺🌼🌿in one of the flower beds.
