On 27th July, Caldicot Male Voice Choir was pleased to be invited to sing at the wedding of Rhian Gritten to Gareth Miller on the beautiful Rooftop Garden Terrace of the Celtic Manor Resort. Rhian who originally hails from Dartford in Kent met Gareth in February 2022 and said yes to Gareth's proposal in September 2023.

Conducted by Sian Hatton and Shirley Anne James and accompanied by John Nicholson, the choir entertained the 80 waiting guests seated on the terrace by opening appropriately with Yfory (Tomorrow), This is the Moment, from the musical ‘Jeckyl and Hyde’ and You’ll Never Walk Alone from ‘Carousel’. Luckily the rain held off during the ceremony to be followed by glorious sunshine.

As the bride walked down the aisle the choir sang the Everly Brothers hit, Let it be Me with perfect timing as the bride arrived to meet her waiting future husband and Love Changes Everything from the musical ‘Aspects of Love’ was sung while the register was signed.

Progressing back along the aisle as man and wife, the choir accompanied their progress with the Bob Dylan song ‘Make You Feel My Love’ with chorister Nigel Keen playing a magical flute solo.

Following the civil ceremony the choir gave a rendering of the ever popular hymn ‘Calon Lan’ with David Gould singing the solo second verse and finalised with the Welsh National Anthem Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau.

The choir wishes the bride and groom all good wishes for a future happy and loving life together.

As part of the 50 year celebrations of Caldicot Town Council, Caldicot Male Voice Choir was one of the highlights with a performance at the Summer Fayre at Caldicot Castle on a rare, gloriously, sunny afternoon on 14th July.

Compered by Steve Drowley, who paid tribute to Bob Doggett’s 50 years and Dave Gould’s 55 years continuous long service in the choir the performance, conducted by Sian Hatton and accompanied by Olivia Dance and John Nicholson treated the audience, basking in the sunshine to a wide mix of music including favourites Rachie, May You Always Have a Song, 16 Tons, Cwm Rhondda, Anfonaf Angel, You’ll Never Walk Alone from ‘Carousel’, A Miner’s Song, 76 Trombones from ‘The Music Man’ and finalising with Stout Hearted Men from the musical ‘New Moon’.

The choir members left the stage to join with their families at the several activities, stage performances by local children and refreshment stalls during the remainder of the afternoon, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

This post contains a selection of photographs taken by Colleen Gauntlett.

The Choir’s next public event is at the Yemeni – Wales Festival 2pm on 11th August at Pill Harrier’s Rugby Ground, Newport. Don’t miss out on a fabulous free day’s events and activities.

About 20 choristers from the associated cycle club of Caldicot Male Voice Choir made their way from Caldicot to the beautiful, historic town of Llandovery, Carmarthenshire to make a few sponsored cycle rides around the area to raise funds for St David's Hospice on the weekend 5th to 7th July.

The highlight of the weekend was to meet up with members of Llandovery Male Voice Choir at the King's Head Inn in the town centre for a session of 'Afterglow' informal singing thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The patrons were treated to a number of joint renditions, including among others, of Rachie, Annie's Song, Let It Be Me, Cwm Rhondda, an amazing version of Anfonaf Angel never before sung by Caldicot at an afterglow, Eli Jenkin's Prayer, Gyfri'r Geifr (Counting the Goats - sung at speed), O Gymru, Caldicot's Down Among the Dead Men, Lily of the Valley with Caldicot's musical director Sian Hatton taking the solo part and of course two versions of Calon Lan.

To close the evening both choirs and patrons alike joined together with an amazing, rousing rendition of Hen Wlad fy Nhadau followed by a tumultuous, appreciative round of applause, cheers and standing ovation.

The joint singing was hugely appreciated by all. demonstrated by the generous contributions made to the St. David's Hospice charity by all who were present at a box collection.

It was wonderful to meet up with another choir from the fraternity of Welsh Male Voice Choirs to share an evening of joint singing as part of Welsh culture.

Included is a selection of the large number of photographs taken by Colleen Gauntlett. during the evening.

On 27th June members of Caldicot Male Voice Choir entertained the patrons of the Wheatsheaf Inn in Magor to a session of unaccompanied 'Afterglow' singing led by chorister Alyn Dawe.

Among the items to entertain drinkers and diners alike included 'Annie's Song', 'Stout Hearted Men', 'Rachie', 'My Grandfather's Clock' and 'Let it be Me' among others, enthusiastically joined in by a chorister from Pontnewydd Male Voice Choir.

The impromptu singing was thoroughly enjoyed by all with a rousing round of applause in appreciation of the choristers' performance.

There was a lot of interest in the choir which potentially lead to at least one new recruit and and interest from an event organiser who approached Colleen.

Colleen also managed to take a series of photographs and a selection is included on this post.

Caldicot Male Voice Choir has sung in many strange and quirky venues but surely few can compare to singing in a tin shed at the back of a pub. In recent weeks the choir has sung not only at the Royal Albert Hall but at St Andrew's Church in Harrow, Methodist Churches in Caldicot and Clevedon, not to mention Tesco Headquarters in High Wycombe but what can beat a tin shed?

An ex school friend of chorister Tony Griffiths, Rob Davis runs the Tin Shed behind the Huntsman pub in the beautiful Shirenewton scenery near Chepstow and was pleased to welcome the choir to a rehearsal night at the venue on June 6th. The shed was built by local residents during Covid restrictions to provide a safe open air meeting place. The invitation provided an opportunity for the choir to present itself to the local residents of Shirenewton with the intended hope of recruiting a few members as well.

The choir, conducted by Musical Director Sian Hatton and Assistant Musical Director Shirley Anne James, accompanied by Olivia Dance and John Nicholson presented a range of popular items including ‘Rachie’, the spirituals ‘Every time I Feel the Spirit’ and ‘Give Me That Ol’ Time Religion’, ‘May You Always Have a Song’, ‘Stout Hearted Men’, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, ‘African Prayer’ and of course Cwm Rhondda.

The formal singing was followed by an ‘Afterglow’ session led by David Gould to which the audience was invited to sing along. This started as always with ‘Annie’s Song’ and included ‘Wise Men Say’, ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’, ‘Calon Lan’, ‘Llef’ and finalising with ‘Down Among the Dead Men’.

The whole evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all and hopefully will encourage some of the men present to join the choir or at least visit us at the Choir Hall in Mill Lane, Caldicot on any Monday or Thursday evening from 7pm. Or visit the web site www.caldicotmalevoicechoir.co.uk

Of course if Caldicot is too far to travel there are other choirs close by who would welcome your interest as well.

As a Tribute and in Remembrance of all those who fought and died on D-Day and during the Normandy campaign 80 years ago to give us the Freedom we enjoy today, this post of the Choir singing 'Comrades in Arms' is sure to be fitting and appropriate at this time.

It was sung at the Annual concert in Caldicot in April 2017 in the presence of Brigadier General Robert Aitkin CBE, Lord Lieutenant of Monmouthshire. Conducted by Musical Director Sian Hatton and accompanied by Stephen Berry.

'Neath one banner, scorn all alarms, we battle to death, gallant comrades in arms'

Rest in Peace. We Will Remember Them.

At the request of Rev. Preben Andersen, the former minister of Caldicot Methodist Church before his retirement to Clevedon, Caldicot Male Voice Choir was delighted to perform a concert at the Kenn Road Methodist Church, Clevedon to a full house of an appreciative and enthusiastic audience on Saturday June 1st.

Conducted by Musical Director Siȃn Hatton and Assistant Musical Director Shirley Anne James and accompanied by Olivia Dance and John Nicholson, the choir presented a total of 18 pieces including a wide range of songs opening with the famous Welsh Hymn ‘Rachie’ and spirituals ‘Ride the Chariot’ and ‘Every time I Feel the Spirit’. Favourites included ‘Anfonaf Angel’, ‘The Prayer’ written originally for Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli and sang partly in Italian; songs from the shows including ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, ‘76 Trombones’ and ‘Bring Him Home’. Other pieces included contrasting ‘16 Tons’ with ‘A Miner’s Song’, ‘O Gymru’, ‘Gwahoddiad’, Bob Dylan’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’, fittingly ‘May You Always Have a Song’ and finalising with ‘World in Union’.

The audience was thrilled and amazed with the skilful playing by accompanist Olivia Dance making her debut as a solo artiste alongside the choir. Her performance comprised renditions of Gershwin’s ‘The Man I Love’, tangos by Argentinian composers ‘Gardel, ‘Por Una Cabeza’, Piazzolla- ‘Tardecita Pampeana’ and ‘Invierno Porteño’ and Chopin’s ‘Nocturne in C-sharp minor, Op. post’.

Olivia’s performance during part two of the concert included Peter Maxwell-Davies’s ‘Farewell to Stromness’, Ro Hancock-Child’s ‘Argonaut’, Gershwin’s ‘A Foggy Day in London Town’ and Irving Berlin’s ‘Cheek to Cheek’ finalizing with Waltz Finale written by Madeleine Dring.

The concert, the largest event at the Church for many years raised over £700 for the work of the church. The choir received many complimentary accolades from those present with the request that the choir returns again.

Caldicot Male Voice Choir is always thrilled to welcome visitors from all over the world to its choir hall, the latest being Hans and Michelle Doorewaard from Nijmegen in the Netherlands on the 16th May. They were spending some time with chorister Andy Friedman an ex work colleague and close friend who brought them along to practice after spending some time in Cardiff, visiting the Newport wetlands and walking along the shores of the Severn estuary at Portskewett.

Following their visit Hans was inspired to write the following:

‘It was amazing to hear them sing!

We were so impressed by the professional and high-standard way of mastering a new song by the choir members. Then, after the break, we felt like a king and queen when the choir sang a number of songs that they had planned to sing the next day during a concert near London. Such a high quality, not only in a technical sense, but also in their ability to convey the emotional content of the song to the audience.

Hats off to all of you, choir members, pianist and conductors!
Thank you so much for having us at the choir hall. We wish you all success and lots of pleasure when you sing together. We do hope to see you again in the near future during one of your upcoming tours.

Who knows? Maybe in the Netherlands?’

You never know and you're welcome at the Choir Hall at any time.

The photo shows Hans and Michelle on the left with friend Andy Friedman and choir chairman Graham Hughes.

It was a boiling hot day when the choir arrived at the St Andrew's Roxbourne church in Harrow 2 hours early so who can blame them for taking a little light refreshment at the Irish Horseshoe pub just down the road? Recommended by the vicar, Rev Lyndon North as his local. The choristers returned to the church for much appreciated refreshments, tea, coffee and soft drinks before the concert.

After the concert the choir returned to the pub for a session of afterglow singing led by chorister Dai Gould, much to the delight and appreciation of the locals. Since it was an Irish pub the choir had to sing Fields of Athenry (with permission).

Despite the long coach trip it was a wonderful day thoroughly enjoyed by all.

On Saturday 18th May the choir, after an absence of ten years and a 3 hour journey on a glorious sunny day returned to the beautiful church of St Andrews Roxbourne in Harrow at the invitation of Caldicot born Rev. Lyndon North.

The choir, conducted by Musical Director Sian Hatton and Assistant Musical Director Shirley Anne James and accompanied by Olivia Dance, opened the concert with the well known Welsh Hymn 'Rachie' and continued to a full house with songs which included '16 Tons' to 'African Prayer', the spiritual 'Everytime I Feel the Spirit', to 'Cwm Rhondda', '76 Trombones', the Welsh hymn 'Gwahoddiad', 'Anfonaf Angel', Bob Dylan's 'Make You Feel My Love'. and finalising with 'World in Union'.

The concert was augmented by the wonderful Capital Connection, a ladies acapella choir from West London conducted by Newport born Linda Stevens which sang, in a unique Barbershop style 'Somebody to Love' by Queen, the Beatles song 'Can't Buy Me Love', 'A Million Dreams' from the musical The Greatest Showman, 'All of Me' by John Legend , Cindy Lauper's 'True Colours' and finalised with ELO's 'Mr Blue Sky'. The whole incredible performance held the audience and choir spellbound throughout.

The choirs and audience left the Church knowing that they had experienced a wonderful evening of musical entertainment that will live long in the memory.

The choir hopes that it will return again to this wonderful church in the not too distant future and thank you to the church for its generous hospitality.

On 11th May the choir was pleased to return to the Methodist Church in Caldicot following its appearance at the Royal Albert Hall two weeks earlier.

In sweltering heat the choir sang to a full house of about 150 supporting fund raising for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The concert included not only the Caldicot Male Voice Choir but the entertaining Bootlegger Shanty Band who come from all over the County but practice in Usk.

The choir's performance opened with the Welsh hymn Rachie and was followed in the programme by favourites from the shows such as Love Changes Everything, 76 Trombones, You'll Never Walk Alone and This is the Moment, The choir also presented among others, Yma o Hyd, African Prayer, A Miner's Song, Y Darlun, Verdi's Speed Your Journey, the spiritual Every Time I Fell the Spirit, Cwm Rhondda and the moving hymn Gwahoddiad (Invitation). The performance finalised to enthusiastic, appreciative applause with Battle Hymn of the Republic.

The choir was conducted by musical Director Sian Hatton, Assistant Musical Director Shirley Anne James and accompanied by Olivia Dance and John Nicholson.

In a contrasting style and joined in by audience and choir alike, the four members of the Bootleggers Shanty Band further entertained the audience with favourites Sloop John B, John Knacker Knacker, The Wellerman Song, telling of Whale hunters in New Zealand, Irish folk songs Whiskey in the Jar and Wild Rover and Cousin Jack relating to emigrant tin miners who had left their native Cornwall to find work around the World.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable concert which we're told raised over £1300 for the RNLI. It was also wonderful to see that the concert was fully supported with a full house.

On the 4th April Richard (Peggy) Mount, who first came along to practice in January, went into the back room to sing a favoured piece to Musical Director Sian Hatton to find out whether he had learned enough of the basics to allow him to become a full member of the choir.

To his and the choir's delight he emerged as an approved second tenor, just in time for him to make his first appearance at the Annual Concert followed by participating in the Festival of Male Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall. What a debut!

On the 2nd May practice in front of delighted choristers Peggy was presented with a certificate to mark his joining the choir together with a choir tie by chairman Graham (Spike) Hughes,

If like Richard you fancy a new hobby why not come along to the choir's practice evenings on any Monday or Thursday from 7pm at the Choir Hall in Mill Lane, Caldicot, near the Leisure centre..

Caldicot Male Voice Choir will once again sing as part of the Festival of Massed Male Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall on 27th April.

In preparation it took part, along with over 400 choristers from all over South Wales and beyond in a rehearsal at the Coleg Cymenudol yr Dderwen in Tondu.

They were put through their paces by conductor Alwyn Humphreys, accompanied by Caradog Williams by practicing all the songs that will be sung at the Royal Albert Hall, this time entirely without copies.

As a reflection of all the hard work done previously at practices under the guidance of the local musical directors, the rehearsal was a great success and proceeded smoothly right through to the end, although ‘Kwmbayah’ needed some more work to reach perfection.

The next practice will be in the afternoon of 27th April at the Royal Albert Hall prior to the concert start at 7-00pm.

There is a video of the choirs singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ on You Tube. Click on the link to get a taster of the incredible sound.
