Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️
You might notice the absence of roses in my bouquets this year. Well let me try and explain why I’ve come to that decision…
It’s something that hasn’t sat well with me for the last few years, you see roses don’t grow here at this time of year. The red roses that you see flooding the supermarkets will probably have come from Africa, maybe Columbia or Ecuador. The problem with this (apart from the miles of transport required) is that Africa is suffering one of the worst droughts in 40 years and yet I’ve recently learnt that each individual rose requires 10 litres of water before it is cut and sent across the world! There’s also the issue of chemicals used that are not allowed to be used by growers in the EU, why? Because they’re so dangerous the growers need to wear a hazmat suit to spray them, yet we can stick our noses into a bouquet that has been treated with them in another part of the world? Now I understand that the trade of these roses benefits these countries, and if everybody stopped buying roses there would be devastating consequences, but there are crops failing because of lack of water, and countries with people who are starving are prioritising watering roses for our enjoyment!
Now I feel slightly hypocritical because I bought asparagus and strawberries at the weekend none of which grow in this country at this time of year! And in a few weeks time when I have a wedding I will use imported flowers, they will probably be Dutch and French, some of which will have been grown in greenhouses that require heating and lighting - so not exactly a sustainable answer either! But I think the issue with red roses at this time of year is the sheer volume that need to be supplied for one day, and it feels unnecessary because there are seasonal alternatives that are just as romantic, beautiful and kinder to the planet.
I don’t have all the answers, and I’m certainly not doing everything right, but I think it’s important to make changes for good, and help educate people on issues they might not know about.
Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day and if you have received roses - enjoy them!
