Listen

Listen Listen! is dedicated to presenting fresh and diverse sounds for curious minds in Cambridge and beyond

is run by Carol Garrison and Graham Lee, enthusiastic gig-goers - and avid listeners - for many years. Our aim is to complement Cambridge's lively music scene by giving musicians who might not be heard elsewhere in the city an opportunity to play for an audience with open ears. Our main focus is on new, original and improvised music, but that's not all!

I’m so excited to start sharing this new music! It’s been almost 5 years since I last released anything. It’s a new direction for me, one that feels like the most honest music I’ve made… and to have Ruth Goller and Sebastian Rochford playing on it feels a bit like a dream come true.

This coming Sunday 13th don't miss super guitarist Rob Luft at The Grasshopper, Parkstone with his Quartet 'Dahab Days'.

Rob has been an essential component of three different ensembles playing at SoundCellar in recent years, but now he brings a great band to perform his own compositions, including from his excellent Egyptian inspired album 'Dahab Days' on Edition Records

We're livestreaming too and you can watch it for up to a month afterwards.

Tickets live or livestream thru https://www.tickettailor.com/events/soundcellar
Note the slightly earlier 7.30pm start for this one

For our final concert of 2024, we're thrilled to present an evening of virtuosic free improvisation from three undisputed masters of the art:

John Butcher (saxophones)
Mark Sanders (percussion)
Philipp Wachsmann (violin & electronics)

John and Mark first met Philipp when attending his improvisation workshops at London's Morley College in the early 1980s. Since then their musical paths have intertwined frequently, and yet surprisingly, this will be the first time they have ever appeared together as a trio. Don't miss their debut performance!

Saturday 9th November, doors 7.30pm, music 8pm.
Cambridge Unitarian Hall, Victoria Street, CB1 1JW

For our August 2024 gig, Soundhunt is very excited to welcome back Alex Ward for a solo set. The range of Alex’s musical experiences and imagination is extraordinary, ranging from improvised music to avant rock, contemporary composition, and everything in between. His CV encompasses long-standing relationships with Derek Bailey and Steve Noble, and he is currently a member of Pere Ubu as well as playing in Thurston Moore’s band. This afternoon he will play an extended solo guitar set incorporating his own compositions as well as plenty of improvisation.
We’re also really pleased to welcome Daniel Thompson for the first time. Daniel is aremarkable acoustic guitarist and runs the excellent Empty Birdcage label. Today he’ll be revisiting his duo with Dominic Lash on double bass.

With great pleasure we announce the 8th year of Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music.

Launched 2017, the festival continues to respond to the city’s appetite for a contemporary grass roots jazz festival, presenting an innovative and diverse international line up, celebrating and pushing boundaries that challenge perceptions of jazz and improvised music.

This year we welcome new performance spaces including Jesmond Swimming Pool and the legendary Tyneside music haunt The Cumberland Arms, alongside our regular venues Gosforth Civic Theatre, The Globe and the Newcastle Literary and Philosophical Society.

We have a special collaboration with the Friday Night Chill Out at Jesmond Pool, and we’ll be featuring live soundtracking to a selection of historic surrealist films in Gosforth working with the help of Northern Silents, once again also commissioning a series of recorded Interludes that can be heard over the PA systems across the festival events and available through New Jazz and Improvised Music Recordings.

We continue to work with our lead partners Jazz North East, but also other key regional promoters including Jazz.Coop, GemArts, and this year we also welcome Endless Window into the fold.

Alongside British and International UK based artists this year we’re delighted to be bringing musicians from Copenhagen, Holland, Switzerland, Japan and the USA.

Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music gratefully acknowledges Arts Council England, associated partners and funders for their support.

We hope you enjoy the show!
