Listen

Listen Listen! is dedicated to presenting fresh and diverse sounds for curious minds in Cambridge and beyond

is run by Carol Garrison and Graham Lee, enthusiastic gig-goers - and avid listeners - for many years. Our aim is to complement Cambridge's lively music scene by giving musicians who might not be heard elsewhere in the city an opportunity to play for an audience with open ears. Our main focus is on new, original and improvised music, but that's not all!

💌 Received some post !! On 11 Jan, I’ll join City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to premiere this new piece, conducted by Ilan Volkov. It portrays five magical siren-like characters (me!) as they each control and manipulate the sea (the orchestra!) in strange and powerful ways. The five movements follow the different forces that these mystical beings can exert on the water: the ability to control the tides, to make the waves dance, to pacify the swells, to create and destroy life within the water and finally to make the sea sing. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun and I can’t wait! It’s my biggest piece to date and I’m very proud of it 😊 Huge thanks to Ash Mistry for the beautiful editing & printing as always, and also Colin Alexander for all his support, help and encouragement over the past few months ♥️ Birmingham friends, I would love to see you there on 11 Jan ~ or if anyone fancies a little trip to Birmingham, I’d also love to see you there!

Our 2025 season gets underway on Saturday 11th January with a brand new duo project from Loose Tubes alumni, Mark Lockheart (saxophones & clarinets) and John Parricelli (guitar).

These two seasoned collaborators will be exploring evocative soundscapes, worldly grooves, original tunes, and say they might even throw in a well-known jazz standard for good measure!

Join us in the intimate surroundings of Cambridge Unitarian Hall to relish a musical conversation between two masters of their instruments. Doors 7.30pm, music 8pm.

This month we are delighted to present the dynamic young Norwegian drummer Emil Karlsen (“an inherently ‘musical’ drummer whose playing has elicited comparisons with such greats as Elvin Jones, John Stevens and Rashied Ali” – Ian Mann (The Jazzmann)) and the innovative saxophonist Caroline Kraabel, winner of the 2021 Ivor Novello Award for Sound Art Composer.

The first half of the concert, which is part of the 2024 Cambridge Jazz Festival Fringe, will present the Karlsen/Lash and Kraabel/Moore duos, after which the musicians will come together as a quartet for the second half.

Sunday 24th November, doors 2pm (music starts 2:30pm)

Thrive, 5-7 Norfolk St, Cambridge, CB1 2LD
