🎼 Don't miss our next recital on Wednesday 10th November at 7:30pm in the North Wing Auditorium with performers Freeman Lok, Coby O'Brien, Micah Patterson and Mallory Beechey!
To find out more about the performers, read their bios below!
Freeman is a final-year music student here at Homerton. He started playing the piano at the age of five and regularly performed both within and outside the school. He is interested in all sorts and dimensions of music ( ranging from classical to pop/jazz, music production to music therapy). This summer, he gained a lot of musical experience working with people in the Hong Kong popular music industry as an arranger/producer. At Cambridge, he has also been involved with the university and Homerton jazz orchestra as a pianist and he is very excited to get live music, especially jazz, back and running again!
Coby is a first year student at Homerton College. They started playing the flute at age 15, and also play piano. They play in a range of styles, from jazz to classical to experimental. They have also been composing since the age of 13, with influences ranging from Maurice Ravel, to Carter Pann, to Olivier Messiaen. They compose in a range of styles for many different ensembles, venturing through many different sonic landscapes.
Micah is a fifth-year Homertonian and first-year PhD in Music Candidate. Growing up in a culturally diverse community in North-West London, he played electric bass in several popular and vernacular styles, including jazz, soul, hip-hop, rock, and North Indian classical. During his teenage years, Micah regularly performed with sitarist Vijay Jagtap (the first Indian classical artiste to perform at Westminster Abbey for the Queen on Commonwealth Day, 1998) and drummer Pete Huntington (session drummer for The Who). Micah and his classmates (including singer-rapper Malachi Amour) formed the JJ Jam band during high school. They won two national competitions: BlastBeat UK (2014) and the Transformation Trust’s Battle of the Bands (2015), performing a distinctive fusion of rock, soul, and UK hip-hop styles. Micah and JJ Jam performed at Wembley Arena for Rock Assembly (2015), opening for Krept and Konan, Example, and Rizzle Kicks. Other pre-university performance experiences include singing in the Ten Pieces II Choir at the BBC Proms (2016) and playing bass with the Jewish Music Institute Youth Big Band at Klezmer in the Park (2017). As an undergraduate (BA) and postgraduate (MPhil) Music student at Homerton (2017-21), Micah sang bass in the Charter Choir and performed in the Homerton Jazz Orchestra (HoJO), alongside playing in other small band ensembles (Patrick Olsen Jazz Band, The Homertones, Cocoa Delgado, and Fink Ployd) for jam nights, private functions, and various Winter and May Balls. As the current President of Homerton Jazz and a Musical Director of HoJO, Micah regularly performs in HoJO and at Jazz in the Buttery nights.
Mallory is a first-year music student at Homerton college. She started playing drum kit aged 8 and also plays piano and percussion. She has played with the Surrey County Youth Jazz Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Collective, and participated in the Big Leaf Foundation project ‘Music Connects’ over the summer. She plays a range of music, from heavy metal to jazz and pop.
