🦋 Gateway Garden update! 🌻
🍿 To mark the progress and achievements at The Gateway Garden so far, the South Kintyre Development Trust Kintyre Grows team and volunteers (pictured below) had a much deserved, and educational, trip to the Campbeltown Picture House to see ‘Wilding’ the fascinating story of Knepp Wilding.
(🎬Also a great opportunity to support our amazing local cinema!)
🐝 Following this inspiring film, we’ll be further developing the wilder aspects of the Gateway Garden tomorrow, planting some native and pollinator-loving flowers and shrubs. Anyone welcome to join in, Tuesday 2-5pm
We not only need to thank all the volunteers and community groups for their help so far, but also none of it would have been possible without funding from The Crown Estate, The Common Good Fund, The Post Code Lottery and Grow Wild, each of which have funded specific elements of the project, from volunteer support to wild flower seeds. We’re not finished yet but it’s definitely taking shape.
Please note - there will be no volunteer session this Wednesday!

🎂🎈 Happy Birthday Anshu!🎈🎂
🌱 Shanti started volunteering at The Gateway Garden in the spring, following a recommendation by Workingrite Argyll. She soon became indispensable and we’re delighted she’s now a much valued member of the South Kintyre Development Trust with the Kintyre Grows Team.
🎵 Thank you for all your hard work and great tunes Shanti!
Shanti won’t be joining us tomorrow as she’ll be at home celebrating her younger brother’s birthday. Her brother, Anshu, has stage 4 cancer and we wanted to mark his birthday tomorrow by sharing his Just Giving Page for his very own Garden Den.

From today (Friday) for a week's worth of screening only the wonderful documentary WILDING.

It tells the incredible story of a young couple who bet on nature for the future of their failing, four-hundred-year-old estate. They set to work with their groundbreaking vision, battling entrenched tradition and major forces along the way, daring to place the fate of their farm in the hands of nature. Ripping down the fences, they set the land back to the wild and entrust its recovery to a motley mix of animals both tame and wild. It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe and beyond.

"Thanks to the Royal Society of Edinburgh we at SKDT we are looking into the unique biodiversity of Campbeltown.
Ed Tyler is the researcher for the project and wants to collaborate with as many folk in the town as possible. Please snap pictures of plants, insects, birds and other animals you spot in the town (with a map pin) and send them to him at [email protected] or to the page kintyre grows (he is setting up wildlife areas in the Gateway Garden).
The picture he's taken is of wild garlic in flower in The Cutting. Wild garlic is what is known as an "indicator" plant and it tells us that the site is ancient woodland. It's still surrounded by trees - and this little plant tells us that there have been trees on this site for hundreds - if not thousands - of years.
So plants can tell us about the past.

🌱Join us at the Gateway Garden tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday 2pm-5pm.
🦋 On Tuesday we’ll be joined by Ed Tyler, leading a biodiversity survey of the site for our Grow Wild project. We’ll also be clearing a bed for planting, creating more beds, sowing seeds and having a blether!
📷 One of the resident toads in the polytunnel where our seedlings for the garden and community groups are germinating. We don’t use slug pellets, protecting the toads so they can eat the slugs for us! 🐸 😊
