The Garlinge Theatre

The Garlinge Theatre We welcome challenging themes that encourage ARTivism! Stage Your Story Mr Brockman was from Broad Oak, Canterbury.

With a capacity of 300, this gem of a theatre within Kent's Area of Natural Beauty, is a safe space for creatives of any discipline to explore & express untold stories. Rebirth of a Theatre: A Sustainable Beacon for the Community

In the heart of our local community, a quaint theatre is experiencing a transformative revival. Once dormant, it now hopes to become a rural centre for the performing ar

ts, a vibrant beacon, pulsating with life and energy. What sets this theatre apart is not just the performances that grace its stage, but the eco-friendly and compassionate heart that beats within its walls. The Garlinge Theatre, previously known as the Ensó theatre, was part of the Steiner School Canterbury, which was established by Ulrike and Alan Brockman. Mrs Brockman, born in Stuttgart, inherited her educational inspiration from her parents, who were friends of Rudolf Steiner and followers of his philosophy. Together they moved to Perry Court Farm, Garlinge Green, which Mr Brockman had bought in 1953 and developed it into Kents first organic farm. In 1976 they bought the original farmhouse of Perry Court Farm with the vision of forming a community. From this, Steiner School Perry Court was founded and opened in 1976 to 14 students in 3 classes. By 1996 the number of pupils had risen to 230 and it was felt that a new creative performance space was needed; this led to the birth of the Ensó Theatre in the autumn of 1997. After the death of Alan Brockman in 2013 the school pupil numbers began to decline. The school closed in 2017 and out of this came the New School, Canterbury. The site is now occupied by Hope View School and The Light Root hub (a home educational group), with the theatre nestled between the two. Since officially opening its doors on March 31st 2024, The Garlinge Theatre has hosted live music, original productions, and has even been used as a filming location. If you'd like us to host your event, performance or workshop, then please do get in touch with Alison at [email protected]

Terry met the ever calm, ever inspiring vegan activist, Ed Winters, aka last week at a book signing in Waterstones, here in Canterbury.

Ed signed his most recent book for us, 'How To Argue With A Meat Eater (And Win Every Time)'. The book will be available to read at our theatre, along with the message Ed put in for our guests.

Thank you Ed 🙏🏼💚

Our next in-house event will be our Vegan Market, taking place on Sunday January 26th, 10am - 4pm! Come on over to peruse the many stalls we will have on offer, including yummy vegan food, and enjoy some live music!

See you there!

Thanks to the great success of our first scratch night last month, we are going again! This time, we are after something a little different...

KEY POINTS
Genre: ethical pantomime
Submission deadline: Monday January 20th at 5pm

This Christmas at the Garlinge Theatre, we would love to put on an ethically driven pantomime. What is an ethical panto? Who knows! But we do know that we are keen to include some of the following;

* social & environmental justice
* awareness of speciesism
* equality
* satire
* kindness & compassion
* powerful storytelling; focusing on solutions, instead of creating more problems
* relatable & realistic characters
* blooming good jokes, and all the fun that traditionally comes with panto!
* recycled and reused set ideas

What we would love from you, dear writer, is to come up with a single 10-15 minute max scene or act, in the genre of panto, that encompasses some or, if you're feeling brave, ALL of the above. We will again select between 6-8 scripts and have these performed at our next scratch night (date TBC).

Not only that, we will invite the audience to vote for their favourite scene or act, which will then be commissioned into a full pantomime for 2025!

Are you up for the challenge?

If you choose to accept, the deadline for submissions is
MONDAY 20TH JANUARY at 5PM.

The 6-8 scripts will be selected based on how well you incorporate the aforementioned themes and topics within the genre of panto.

Send your submissions to Alison at [email protected]

We very much look forward to reading them!

"I saw Claire and Tim in Maldon and it was so popular they’re doing it again in a bigger venue!
You’ll know all the songs but I had no idea how many were written by Carole King."

"What a fantastic evening! Such a wonderful tribute to Carole King.
It takes a very special talent to perform an evening of songs written and performed by this great Lady, and that talent was in abundance at tonight’s show.
Get to see these amazing musicians perform. You won’t be disappointed!!!"

"Bloody excellent."

Live music at the Garlinge Theatre!

On January 31st we will be welcoming a musical delight to our stage; RAINEY'S.

Rainey’s invite you to immerse yourself in the nostalgic melodies of the 1920s/1930s and 1940s for a captivating journey back in time. This talented band of professional musicians interpret some of Ma Rainey's iconic songs and feature a handpicked selection of beloved tunes. The music has been meticulously arranged to capture the true essence of the era, transporting you back to the jazz clubs of yesteryears.

Ma Rainey, dubbed the Mother of the Blues, was a prolific blues singer in the early part of the 20th century. Join us for an evening celebrating this era and the woman herself, at the Garlinge Theatre!
