As it’s we thought we would share a little bit of history about our hotel…

The original house named “Westfield House” was built in 1830; the ownership was passed on to the Evans family later.

The eldest Evans’ son (Francis) took his mother’s maiden name of Bennett–Goldney as to benefit from his aunt’s estate. After the passing of his father Francis renamed the house to The Abbots Barton. Barton means “home farm.”

Bennett-Goldney is known for his work as a Director and Curator of the Canterbury City Museum, later progressing to become the Lord Mayor from 1905-1910, after becoming MP for Canterbury until 1918. It was during this time (1907) he was appointed “Athlone Pursuivant” (junior officer of arms) to the College of Arms in Ireland, suspiciously shortly after his appointment the Irish Crown Jewels went missing from the Dublin Castle and were never recovered. There is high speculation he was a suspect due to his thievery past.

The house was converted in 1927 to a hotel, which it has remained throughout, with the exception of World War 2 when it was used as a hospital.
