Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem from Solihull were fatally stabbed by Janbaz Tarin in 2018.
On the 31st October 2022, an inquest heard Raneem feared social services would "take my baby away" if she reported him. She wanted to co-operate with the social workers but her fear of having her child taken away was too overwhelming.
Janbaz was obsessive and and controlling of Raneem and had a violent history towards the police.
Raneem, who fled the Syrian war in 2014, met Janbaz in college and they later were
Islamically married.
The police received multiple reports from Raneem of Janbaz and his violent behaviour throughout their relationship.
Janbaz told Raneem on their wedding day
"In our culture we don't have divorce.. the day you leave, I will kill you".
Raneem was an ambitious and talented woman. She enrolled in a college and was learning how to speak English. She had a bright future ahead of her.
The coroner has told jurors they would go through seven tranches of phone calls Raneem made to the police between April and August 2018, to understand "how the police responded and also how other agencies responded".
The inquest continues.

Raneem and thousands of other women like her have been killed by men who believe a woman is their property, their belonging and they can treat them with disrrspect, cruelty and violence.

We can no longer have women feel too scared to report their perpetrators to the police for fear of losing their children.
Services need to do more to work with victims of abuse, and cancel the victim blaming culture still very much engrained in so many services.

Join us on the 25th November for our where we will remember Raneem and her Mother Khaola and the thousands of other women who were abused and killed.

Welsh Women's Aid is looking to hear opinions on how we can make our support for black and ethnic minority women more inclusive and effective. Even if you haven't experienced domestic violence yourself, your say would still really help make a difference.

Happy International Womens Day to all you amazing beautiful queens. Keep being you, you are needed wanted and loved💜💗💜💗

Sad I can’t do an event this year as I’m on holiday, but after all the hard work and achievements I’ve made over the last 3 years I’m looking at this trip as self care on a day that is also about myself. I love my charity and community work, I wouldn’t change if for the world but I do forget about myself A LOT! So here’s to you beautiful women, and to myself also! 🥂🙋🏽‍♀️

Psychological abuse within a relationship is illegal.

“I’m just going to make a stance and say that I’m not going to answer that question anymore because the question should really be to the abuser, ‘Why are you holding someone hostage with abuse?’ You know? And people say, ‘Oh, it can’t have been that bad because else she would have left.’ And no, it’s because it was that bad, I couldn’t leave.”

"Leaving an abusive relationship isn’t always an option. A survivor may stay for many reasons including fear of consequences, lack of financial resources, the worry of not being believed, and guilt around feeling responsible for the abuse (source: ). Please don’t ask a survivor this question."
