We’re joining in celebrating Heritage Treasures Day by showcasing the iconic Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay!

The Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay remains a cherished symbol of community in Wales’ capital, despite having undergone many changes over the years, including repainting the exterior for wartime camouflage during WWII, rebuilding and two relocations. The Norwegian Church’s most recent and final move was to its current iconic location overlooking the Bay.

What are your favourite memories of the Norwegian Church?

We’re joining in celebrating Heritage Treasures Day today! We’re showcasing the iconic Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay, but why was there a Norwegian congregation in Cardiff in the first place?

Cardiff’s coal export boom in the 19th century led to increased trade with Norway. Strong Norwegian timber was used as ‘pit props’ to help support the Welsh coal mines and became an essential part of the Coal industry.

This trade brought thousands of Norwegian sailors to Cardiff, where they settled and formed a vibrant community. As the community continued to grow, there was an increasing need for communal spaces for Norwegians to worship, socialise and maintain cultural traditions!

We’re joining in celebrating Heritage Treasures Day (14th January) with a little showcase of the iconic Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay!

The first Norwegian congregation in Cardiff was established in 1866, with Church meetings taking place in a rented venue. Eventually, in 1868, Cardiff Bay’s iconic Norwegian Church was built under the guidance of Pastor Carl Hermann Lund and the Norwegian Seamen’s Mission.

The Norwegian Church became the beating heart of Cardiff’s Norwegian community. By 1915, Cardiff Bay’s Norwegian Church was hosting over 73,000 seamen a year and was part of a wider global network of Norwegian Churches.

Stay tuned for more photos and history tidbits…

The aim is to showcase the rich history of Cardiff Bay over the past two centuries and bring to life stories of individuals and families who lived and worked in and around Cardiff Docks and Butetown (Cardiff Bay).
We are looking for texts, photographs, memories, and videos.
