'Meddai tad-cu unwaith,
fe fyddi’n deall beth dw i’n ei olygu.
Bod yn ddu, meddai, yw bod yn wych,
peidio byth â chywilyddio at fy nghroen,
nac at bwy ydw i.'

'Mynydd y Pigau yw Mynydd Eithinen. Ers miloedd o flynyddoedd mae pobl wedi gadael eu hôl yma. Yn ffosydd a chloddiau, yn gylchoedd daear, yn dwmpathau llawn esgyrn a gemwaith.'

Each day this week we’ll be sharing the work of our selected From Now On writers on the Artes Mundi journal!

First up is us (them) us by Ewan Smith, which you can read via the link below. The piece was inspired by Beatriz Santiago Muñoz’s work in the Artes Mundi 9 exhibition.

‘What is a river? Flowing water? Mud banks? Teeming life? An idea?
Water can be poisoned, mud banks dug away, life consumed. But can they destroy an idea?’

As part of our bilingual Hunan-Iaith project, we spent a weekend at Tŷ Newydd with Y Stamp pre-covid, where our collectives worked on a collection of poetry in translation and discussed terminology around racial identity in the Welsh language. You can playback last year’s Hunan-Iaith event in our Facebook videos for a taster of some of the pieces created.

We’re really excited to soon be able to share what we’ve been working on as the project has developed over the last year - watch this space. ✨

Our Story

‘Where I’m Coming From’ was set up in August 2017 by Hanan Issa and Durre Shahwar as an open mic series to predominantly but not exclusively promote Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) writers and voices in Wales. We intended it to be a safe space where local creatives can share their thoughts through the medium of the spoken word, be it poetry, prose, or something more unconventional. The aim is to challenge, explore, de-construct or even parody any topic with respect and open-mindedness.

As well as showcasing upcoming creatives, the series also aims to incorporate talks and debates with the aim of bridging the gap between local communities, writers, artists, and organisations.

Over the course of the year, we have grown into a platform for not only BAME voices, but for people from all walks of life - especially young and new performers and students. All are welcome, as we hope that the sessions will provide an effective networking space for those looking to converse and collaborate creatively. The sessions are run on a monthly basis and any changes are listed on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Thanks, Hanan Issa / Durre Shahwar / Taylor Edmonds
