Thank you as always to Tommy Stainer for his wonderful weekend Match Report!

Photos to follow!

The Guinness Carrick Sevens took place over the week-end of 3rd to 5th May 2024.
Despite somewhat inclement weather and a lower entry than usual for the Quigg Golden Open on Saturday, there was a good entry from Ladies teams for the Sunday competition and some excellent rugby was played over the week-end, with some very keenly contested finals. Long time supporters Forrester from Edinburgh managed to enter a team this year - with some support from Carrick - and in their match with NI Kaviti produced some of the most innovative tactics ever seen on a rugby field.
These involved much lying about and and pointing out the way to the try-line in case the opposition weren't sure!! And if ever there was an opposition which DID know the way to the try-line it was long time supporters of the Sevens, Fijian side NI Kaviti.
Forrester Former Pupils did manage to score a try - one of their few over the years - but their tactics did not prevent the opposition from running up fifty points! The Novos Ladies from Newcastle-upon - Tyne once again entered two teams - one of which reached the Cup Final - and added considerably to the sartorial elegance of the occasion with their "Jailbird" themed outfits. Dundee Valkyries made a welcome return to the Ladies' competition and went home with the Bowl prize. Carrick was also delighted to welcome to the Ladies competition "Yer Ma's 7s", a team set up to encourage former players who have had children to return to the game

There were the usual non-rugby entertainments, with a bouncy castle for the children and Cheeser's Fun and Frolics for the slightly older children; these involved as usual frozen tee-shirt and spinning drop kick competitions. Last, but by no means least, the world famous Reaper Burgers were once again on sale. However, this year a much younger generation was in charge, displaying considerably more business acumen than their (much) older predecessors with the introduction of a tips bowl. The only "tips" the given to the Reapers in previous years are not suitable for reproduction in a family Sevens report!

The Tournament started on Friday evening with the Sewing Solutions Under 18s competition for which the Player of the Tournament sponsor was J C Motors. The Cup was won by Instonians (RBAI) who edged out City of Armagh in a hard-fought encounter while Carrick beat local rivals Ballyclare in another closely contested match in the Plate Final.
The Bowl was won by Portadown who beat Belfast (Met) Wolves in their final while Cavan overcame Ophir in the Wooden Spoon play-off. J C Motors Player of the Tournament was Ben McCausland of Instonians. At the conclusion of the tournament, the Everest Cup was presented to the winning Captain by the daughter of the late Johnson (Jonty) Everest.

The Quigg Golden Open on Saturday 4th May produced some very good contests and in the end composite side Warriors beat NI Kaviti to take the Holmes Salver in a hard-fought Cup Final, scoring the only two tries of the game. Clogher Valley had a comfortable win against Carrick in the Plate Final while Lisburn just edged out Grosvenor in the Willis Bowl Final. The Wooden Spoon game was won by Carrick Academy side Don't Give a Ruck which meant that Forrester Former Pupils got to take home a real Wooden Spoon! The Circles Bicycles & Coffee Player of the Tournament was Scott McLean of Warriors. The prizes were presented by Eddie Quigg of Quigg Golden and the Holmes Salver was handed over to the Captain of Warriors by Roger Holmes.

Sunday produced the best weather of the week-end and some excellent rugby from the Ladies and Girls teams. The Mid & East Antrim Council sponsored Cup competition for the Lynda Waring Memorial Cup was in the end won by a very good Queens's University side who neat Newcastle visitors "40 and Naughty " in the final while City of Derry took the Plate, beating Belfast Harlequins "Quincredibles" in their final. The Bowl was won by Dundee Valkyries who overcame Carrick in their final and the Wooden Spoon went to Novos from Newcastle who faced "Yer Ma's 7s" in the play-off.
The Clanrye PRH sponsored Player of the Tournament was Stacey Sloan of City of Derry.
The Girls' competition was a best of three affair between Carrick and Clogher Valley with the Co Tyrone side winning all three matches. The Clanrye PRH sponsored Player of the Tournament was Victoria Bothwell of Clogher Valley.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the Mayor Geradine Mulvenna presented the prizes for the Ladies and Girls competitions, Club President Rab Hawkins thanked the Sevens Committee and volunteers for their work in putting on the competition, thanked all those who had participated and gave a special thanks to the sponsors without whom it would not be possible to stage the tournament.
