Today had involved a trip to Lincolnshire to take the service of a friend. A packed chapel showed the esteem that Paul was held in. We celebrated his love of motorsport - especially F1, and a nephew had written an amazing poem for him. We laughed and we cried, but there were definitely smiles everywhere. And people were catching up with each other - sometimes after over 40 years. The ‘military family’ is ever thus.
‘Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened’.

A daughter planned a wonderful service for her Dad, who was a witty and accomplished journalist. He’d been the TV and Arts critic for a major newspaper. There were numerous tributes paid, and beautiful music played. He owned hundreds - perhaps thousands - of books.

Among the tears, there were so many smiles and laughs as we told the story of a wonderful lady. Lucky to find and rekindle her first love after losing her much loved husband, she also adored Jason Momoa - even having a life sized cardboard cutout of him.

Known by many as ‘chutney’, his daughter spoke of the many names he’d been given. They’d also chosen a lovely poem about being a gardener, to reflect his main hobby. I also told the story of how he’d almost shot a donkey when on guard duty as a Soldier. The donkey hadn’t responded to his shout of ‘who goes there?’ Rest assured, the donkey was unharmed.

Doing a 3rd service for a family is both sad, but also a privilege that they trust me so much.
There was great music, and the lady’s daughters wrote and read a wonderful tribute. As they said, once you realise that a eulogy is all about love, it becomes easier to write. And as a coincidence, on what is National Poetry Day, I gave the first reading of a beautiful poem written by the husband.

‘Their whole world’. That was how this wonderful gentleman was described by his daughter and grandchildren. From his storytelling and drawing, to his gardening and beekeeping, he was involved on every level in their lives. With loving - and emotional - tributes and readings, they were able to say their goodbyes. And the lovely family dog was there too.

Immensely proud of his service in the Royal Artillery, and later with Thames Valley Police - where was affectionately known as ‘Chamois Pete’, there were warm and loving tributes from his wife and daughter. And one of his young grandsons played a favourite piece on the violin.

Doing his National Service in the RAF changed this gentleman’s life. He became an aircraft engineer, and on returning to civilian life travelled the world with his family for his work. He’d visited 38 countries, and all the continents. One of his sons gave a wonderful tribute, and his love of sailing was honoured in the exit music - a fabulous sea shanty.

A family saying goodbye to a brother, uncle and friend. He was competitive - and accomplished - at whatever he did, be it sailing, skiing, golf or ballroom dancing. His dancing shoes sat in pride of place on his coffin, as his family told stories of his life.

‘I don’t think anyone will come’. The words to his sister when they were discussing his funeral. How wrong he was. It was standing room only, with many more outside listening on the speakers. A young Dad taken far too soon. Moving words from his daughter, sister, current partner and ex partner were woven into the service. His absolute love of motorsports - which he excelled at - was celebrated in t-shirts that many wore, and having his personalised number plate with him, and US flags, as his car was painted in it.

Family said their goodbyes to a dearly loved Aunt. Lovingly described as a ‘bossy rat bag’, there were amusing stories told, especially her ability to always managing to cut heads off photos - even if everyone had been carefully - bossily - posed.

Coming to England as a teenager and working his way up the hotel industry, and then travelling the world to do so, this chap then went into sales where proverbially, he could sell ice to Eskimo’s. The family related stories of his kindness and support. And he was a lifelong Arsenal supporter.

My second service was for another fearless gentleman - this time on motorbikes. His bike helmet and gloves were on display, and his young grandson wrote and read a wonderful poem, and his daughter gave an amazing tribute. The last music was the full version of Bat Out If Hell.

My first service of the day was for a man who’d worked in the construction industry all his life. He was also fearless in many ways, thinking nothing of climbing a crane in a storm to make it safe. Two of his grandsons spoke, and told of their often funny memories of him.
