Richard Pilbrow
There are many tributes to Richard from thoseI revered & aspired to emulate on my youth. I, like many was not in his immediate circle but I am proud to be able to call him an inspiration and also my my mentor.
I came to the west end in the 80’s and was inspired to pursue a career lighting design.
It was Richard that coached and guided me and I’m sure countless others through his book Stage lighting. Richard gave all of us that couldn’t get the Rada bursary or into the few lighting design courses that there were then a comprehensive understanding of lighting principles.
Over the years I have owned numerous copies of Richard’s book, all passed on to young aspiring designers. I still rely on him day to day and evoke his spirit when confronted by a stage lit with just front light or sea of moving heads with no stage cover.
Richard taught me to light the subject first, preferably an absolute minimum of 3 points -a concept much more relevant today than then with such a plethora of moving heads and effects to detract from the performance or subject matter. I did meet Richard once at an industry event and I’m thankful that I was able to thank him and tell him he was such a huge influence and responsible for my career.
I gave my last copy of richard book away at least 5 years ago and I’m ashamed to say have not replaced it preferring send a link. I’m going to buy another today for the next time I need to give one away.
In the meantime if you come across me being uncomplimentary about your FOH cover or lack of back/ side or any other light, rest assured Richard is at my side guiding me. As ever, in his absence still at my side.
