A delighted guest enthusiastically offers a congratulatory hug for the groom on this sunny spring wedding day.

On the morning of their intimate, secret wedding, Natasha and Ed were very relaxed as they prepared at home. Here Ed is helping his wife-to-be with her shoes while their families, the only guests privy to their plans, enjoyed drinks downstairs in the kitchen.

The ceremony itself took place at the historic Bruce Castle Museum, witnessed solely by their closest relatives. A few weeks later, they threw a celebratory party to reveal their surprise to all their friends: they were already married!

Surrounded by loved ones, Charlotte and Matthew share their first dance on the lawn under the lights of Leez Priory's carriageway.

A wonderfully warm late-September evening, perfect for a wedding. See this and other beautiful weddings from start to finish on my website, in the 'Real Weddings' section.

An evening walk around the grounds of High House for Reanne on her wedding day. Beautiful, warm sunshine on a September day. I love how the sun backlights the leaves at the top, and just catches the outline of everything you can see.

Situated just minutes from my doorstep, High House is the closest dedicated wedding venue to my home.
Travelling throughout the UK and Europe to capture the beauty of weddings in diverse locations is a privilege. Yet, there's a certain charm in rediscovering the beauty right on my doorstep.

Observing these fleeting, authentic expressions is a key part of my documentary approach. I thrive on capturing busy complex scenes just as much as I love capturing the quieter moments with the focus on one person. In this case, one of Charlotte's bridesmaids during the calm morning preparations. Unstaged and natural.

The treacherous journey for Chris & Karla through the confetti tunnel at Houchins.
Chris’s expression—caught between exhilaration and a hint of trepidation—speaks volumes... Some wedding guests were just a little too enthusiastic with their confetti throwing.

I heard just this afternoon that it is World Drummer's Day, 4/4.
Drummers tend to be hidden away at the back often, but occasionally, I get the chance to capture them as the focal point of my pictures. Here are just a few shots I've taken at wedding receptions.

Thanks to my experience in music photography, I bring an extra dimension to capturing the evening reception. That's why I stay late for the party.

Layered details invite you to shift your focus, from the boy chilling out with the dog, to the member of the catering staff enjoying a moment to sit down, to the gentlemen in their morning suits enjoying a chat in the sunshine, and a plastic lawnmower left on the lawn that a toddler was playing with moments before.
A particularly lovely element is the inclusion of Vicky, a familiar face I've captured throughout all her children's weddings, here strolling with her small grandchild in the pram. Not just a single moment but a rich tapestry of stories woven together.

Clearly, an unstaged photograph, and it’s photos like this that remind me why I love my documentary photography approach when shooting weddings.
This was taken during the cocktail hour of a wonderful garden wedding in Latchingdon overlooking the River Crouch, just down the road from where I am in South Woodham.

A glimpse into the serene preparations of Lucy and Matt's wedding at Alpheton Hall Barns, in a suite overlooking the pond at The Mill Hotel.
A warm and balmy morning saw the bride needing to be fanned with whatever was to hand – a magazine, in this case.

Sometimes it's the really small things that catch my attention.
I cannot help but be drawn to the way the layers of tulle of the dress gather in the expectant bridesmaid's hand as she is helped with her shoes.

Spontaneous kisses on the dance floor aren't just reserved for the newlyweds; guests get in on the action too during a wedding.

I wouldn't capture pictures like these if I left straight after the first dance. That's why I'm known for staying late for the party and catching these candid moments.

I almost exclusively shoot with wide lenses (in fact, I've calculated that they account for 98% of my work on a wedding day). I also only use prime lenses, which means they don't zoom – I use my feet to find the perfect composition instead.
I love how my lens choices help me capture weddings in a way that encourages you to engage with the scene. I adore a busy image with plenty of details to discover, like in these shots from Sarah's bridal preparations.

I see the subject of vicars and wedding photographers has come up in the news today. So, I have selected just a few of my vicar-related photographs that I've captured over the years.

I must say that in my 14 years of full-time wedding photography, I haven't encountered any rudeness. They've all been very welcoming of myself, my cameras, and my humanist ways!
My documentary-style approach is really suited to fitting around others because I'm not staging the scene, not directing the day, and just shooting what happens naturally.

Occasionally, I am booked for a wedding where photography is not allowed during the ceremony. However, I always suggest to my couples that they find out the rules beforehand so they know what to expect.

Just some classic comfort food - sausage and mash... and the gravy shot!
The sun was streaming in during the meal The Lion Inn, a wedding venue near Chelmsford.

I imagine most people want to remember what they ate for their wedding breakfast, so I always make sure I get some pictures of the food.

The Victorian horseshoe bar of The Peasant in Clerkenwell transformed into a busy dance floor during Dave & Lucy's wedding reception.
I thoroughly enjoy capturing moments like these, as there is so much to see and notice in every photograph. And by this stage of the wedding, I have spent the entire day with this group of strangers, listening to their stories, and they are no longer strangers to me.

The beauty of documentary wedding photography lies in its focus on authenticity. I avoid directing or staging moments, giving everyone the freedom to simply be themselves and celebrate this special day.
I'm all about letting everyone do their thing and letting the story unfold naturally. And that includes noticing me and smiling at the camera or striking a pose if it feels right. I just won’t be telling anyone what to do!

Puddle was a very important part of Millie & George's day and behaved impeccably. I love the moment here where she looks up at Bridget from Anna Shutes Catering, who has the food!

Having photographed weddings for fourteen years, it's been wonderful to witness the growing trend of including special canine family members.
Many venues now allow a visit, and dog chaperone services (which sounds like a very happy job to have) are also readily available.

On this grey, chilly January day, here's something vibrant from a warm summer's day wedding at Leez Priory, a Tudor manor wedding venue near Chelmsford. Steph and her friends are captured casually walking on the lawn, thoroughly enjoying the day and playfully posing for the camera.
