According to NICE (the National Institute for Health and Excellence), adults in the UK experience an average of two to three colds a year and children an average of five to eight. If you're suffering with a cold (or flu) there are many ways you can help to alleviate symptoms without reaching for the over counter drugs.

Zinc - has been known to support the immune system as well as having an antiviral effect. It is best to take to take zinc at the first signs of illness ( 50-100 milligrams daily)

Vitamin C - taking 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily can help to ward off the flu as it helps the immune system to function and boosts white blood cells. Taking up to 4,000 milligrams daily when you are experiencing symptoms can help relieve you of any major discomforts. Boost your Vitamin C levels by eating lots of fruit and vegetables daily, including bell peppers, leafy greens, kiwi, broccoli, berries, oranges, tomatoes and green peas.

Vitamin D - is produced in the body by sunlight and can help build the immune system, therefore helping to reduce the risk of catching the flu. With recent research showing that low vitamin D levels are linked to higher rates of cold, flu and respiratory infections, it’s important to keep your vitamin D levels at the recommended amount. During the winter months when vitamin D through sunlight is reduced, supplementing with 10020 micrograms.

Other natural remedies include - ginger (antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory), garlic (immune boosting), elderberry (sinus support). Getting lots of sleep and drinking lots of liquids.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. SAD is sometimes known as “winter depression” as symptoms are usually more apparent and severe during the winter months, although some people can feel symptoms during the summer months and feel better during the winter. The exact cause of SAD is not fully understood, but it's often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter autumn and winter days. The main theory is that lack of sunlight may affect the production of melatonin and serotonin and the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm). Making lifestyle changes such as ensuring that you are getting as much natural sunlight as possible, exercising regularly and managing your stress levels and light therapy can also be helpful. If you feel that you or someone you know may be suffering from SAD visit https://www.mind.org.uk to find out more.

Vitamin D is not only an essential vitamin for supporting our immunity, it also has a positive impact on our bone health, hormonal health, cardiovascular health and our mood. Foods that supply the highest amounts of naturally occurring Vitamin D include fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna and sardines), eggs, mushrooms, yogurt and cheese. As we enter the winter months and our exposure to sunshine is reduced, most people benefit from taking a Vitamin D supplement. The recommended daily amount is 10-20 micrograms.

As we transition into the sweater wearing season, we also welcome the autumn equinox, a day in the calendar that people either love or hate. September 23rd heralds the arrival of the Autumn Equinox - one of just two moments in the year when the sun is exactly above the equator, meaning the day and night are of equal length. The Autumn Equinox marks the end of summer and the beginning of Autumn. It may feel depressing to lose the longer evenings and the sunshine but Autumn is a great opportunity to reset, get back on track with your food and exercise and spend time in nature. What are your goals for Autumn?
