Far Hill Flowers

Far Hill Flowers At Far Hill Flowers we grow beautiful flowers for weddings, funerals and florists. Artisan floristry We are based just outside Monmouth.
(11)

At Far Hill Flowers we grow a range of beautiful, traditional cottage garden flowers. They have a heavenly scent, vibrant colours and are grown outside and some in our small polytunnel. The cutting garden is awash with butterflies, bees, hoverflies, lacewings and all other sorts of insects. We also have slugs and snails but to help us combat those there are many thrushes who work tirelessly to eat

their way through them and when they are exhausted the frogs and toads take over. The plants are fed with nettle and comfrey soup and our homemade compost. We supply local florists and DIY brides and anyone who needs flowers for a special occasion or just because. Call us or message us and see what we can do for you.

Getting festive on a freezing day! Such fun had with a wonderful group of people who all made stunning wreaths here this morning. Every single ingredient was grown on our farm from the willow bases, hay cover, foliage, berries and hips for decoration to the feathers!🌲🎄

I love a frosty day. Still around in the late afternoon. A seasonal day gathering crispy leaves. The satisfaction of a big job done.... and strictly on the telly tonight 😁

To get these beauties.... first you have to clear your beds, then plant your bulbs, then cover over and label, then....if you live where I do... take every precaution to stop squirrels and mice eating them all. 🤞

I've spent today clearing the last crap out of the tunnel, setting up the bench in there ready for all the seed trays and then shredding a huge pile of garden debris. It's all very important work but it doesn't look pretty. So here are some dalias from a few weeks ago. Tomorrow they are all being cut down and tucked up for the winter.. bye bye, until next summer.

I put on my Sunday best (2nd picture) and spent yesterday cleaning the polytunnel and cold frame. It may not look much but it's a very important job, if a filthy one. Plants need light, especially in the winter when the days are so short and cleaning your tunnels and greenhouses now not only stops the build up of pests and diseases which may be lurking in the corners but allows much more light into the structures. When I start sowing seeds next year they will have all the light available.

The woods are alive with fungi and the sound of the stream. This stream runs in the winter and dries up by May at the latest. It's hugely important to me and the flowers as I capture water from it and store it in two huge tanks which then feed my flower patch. All by gravity. There are bonuses to living on a Welsh hillside.

A glorious sunny autumnal day and perfect weather for mulching the beds. The first picture is some of the fantastic compost which has been cooking all summer and is now ready to feed the soil with all its nutrients and bacteria. Second is of leaves mowed up and stored in big builders sacks. Third is where the bags are stored for the next year. Dark and damp behind my workshop and finally the last picture is what those leaves turn into. Wonderful leaf mould with which to mulch your beds. Nothing wasted. All natural. All good.

Probably some of the last flowers of the season. The dahlias are still flowering but everything is beginning to look a bit tired. I now just want to clear it all away and start preparing for spring 🌱

More shots from Tuesday's workshop with and .chappell.flowers at .
This was created using only dried materials. I don't use many dried flowers because my shed gets damp and I can't store them. It was lovely to use such a huge range of grasses and flowers. Very stiff compared to my usual form but so atmospheric. Huge thanks to for the editing tips which have transformed these shots.

Huge thanks to and .chappell.flowers for organising today's course at the beautiful . Along with who gave us some wonderful information. It was a delight to spend a day arranging flowers with someone else's ingredients and a superb backdrop. Lovely to meet and . Let's hope for some better pictures from me now 😳

It's dark and absolutely soaking here so I thought I'd post this picture of a box of little vases which decorated a special birthday back in September. They were so zingy!

So now the weddings are done it's all about getting ready for next year! These beds were full of
achillea and sweet rocket but they had been in too long. They were overgrown with weeds and the plants needed replacing. Brush cut everything down to the bone. Covered with cardboard and old carpet thrown out by a marquee company. They'll stay covered until April and May next year when new plants will go in. No digging required.

Another weekend, another wedding....but not quite...this one was my eldest son's wedding. We did the flowers...in a sheep trailer up the M6 to Halifax and a wonderful venue in an old mill. It was the best day. Halifax is gorgeous and the Piece Hall is an absolute revelation (should be the next setting for a Jane Austin series). Feeling tired and elated now. If you are planning a wedding all I can say is have petal confetti all over the floor...it entertained the children all day!

A gorgeous palette to today's wedding. But boy was it hot! Reminded me of last year when every wedding seemed to be boiling. I know we're never happy with the weather but as far as flowers are concerned....mild and wet is perfect.
