Avoid the ‘Albanian Riviera’ of crowded beaches and massive hotels and go for a wander around this beautiful historic spot.
Perched on a hilltop with stunning views over the sea, the ruins of the castle and its village date back to Illyrian times (10th century BC to 1st century BC).

Notable among the many churches is the Church of the Virgin Mary or Episcopal Church, constructed on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to the god Apollo. Additionally, the easily accessible Church of All Saints, situated at the castle’s entrance, is another prominent religious site that graces the Himara coastline.

Gjirokastra Fortress dominates the town and overlooks the strategically important route along the river valley.

The first fortifications were probably built in the 5th century BC. Since then the castle has been enlarged over the ages and in 1670 it included around 200 houses. It was the centre of the town until the Bazaar developed outside its northern gate in the 15th century.

During Ottoman times the castle was progressively enlarged and improved until Ali Pasha of Tepelena gave it its present shape by adding the clock tower and its southwest extension in 1811-1812, making it the second largest castle in the Balkans. He built a 12 km aqueduct to bring drinking water from the mountains.

The vineyard and winery were created by Beqir Fiska after the fall of Communism, (1997). He planted an old but little known grape variety - the ‘pules’.
The family has continued to develop the business, so today there is also a red wine (with merlot and cabernet blends), and Raki, the famous Albanian spirit.

The Alpeto vineyard is in a small, sleepy village on the edge of a valley surrounded by mountains. Take a couple of days off to enjoy the peace and quiet, go on walks in the surrounding countryside and - of course - to enjoy a ‘tour’ of the vineyard and a tasting of the wines accompanied by a three course dinner, afterwards.

There is a beautiful terrace overlooking the vineyard where you can enjoy the peaceful view while eating, drinking or simply sitting. The food is locally produced and freshly cooked.

With its beautiful coastal setting, Butrint is undoubtedly the most outstanding of Albania's ancient sites.

18 km from Saranda, it dates back a lot later than the town, probably to the 6th century BC when the Greeks from Corfu came to live here. Today the magical ruins of the site show each period of the city’s development.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) is closely associated in many aspects with the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, which houses 24 of his paintings 🖼️

Prince Eugene of Savoy's 18th-century summer palace is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, surrounded by formal gardens. Now the Belvedere Gallery, it is crammed with art treasures dating from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The Belvedere’s permanent collection has true artistic gems among which are the works of the fin-de-siècle and modernism signed by Gustav Klimt, Max Oppenheimer, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. The space devoted to the works of Klimt is peerless: it provides an overview of the artist’s paintings, from his Impressionist period until his late works, including the "Golden Portraits" and representative works of Secessionist art. The gallery also has international works, including paintings by Monet and Renoir.

The Kiss - without a doubt, the star of the Belvedere and one of the most reproduced and recognizable images in the world of art. It is worth paying a visit to the gallery, even if it’s only to stand in awe of Klimt’s most moving piece.

Opposite The Old Town, and just 1200 metres from The Old Port, this small, natural paradise has had a turbulent past 🇬🇷

The island is the final resting place of many thousands of Serbian soldiers killed in the First World War. It was used as a quarantine camp for those who suffered from typhoid. You can still see some tee-pee scout camps with mattresses inside as well as monuments erected by Serbians in the 1930s as a token of gratitude to the Greek nation. Over 5,000 people were also buried at sea near the island, so the waters are often referred to as the “Blue Sea Tomb” as coined by poet Milutin Bojić📖

It is worth visiting the monument of the Serbian military and the historic church of Agios Stefanos. On the island, there are two beaches, a restaurant and a cafeteria🍽️

The Ancient Agora of Athens was a gathering point whether it was for business, shopping, politics, or just a chat. As you wander around it, you will see a variety of different buildings from temples – such as one dedicated to Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths – to a handful of stores, and even a bouleuterion (assembly house). The Agora was the hub of Athenian daily life. You can also visit the Agora’s museum in the Stoa of Attalos, and admire objects from the site like sculptures, coins, and toys.
